The Vintners Quality Alliance(VQA) is an Appellation of Origin system by which consumers can identify wines of Canada based on the origin of the grapes from which they are produced. With the VQA system, Canada joins other leading wine-producing countries in developing a body of regulations and setting high standards for its wines. In Ontario, the VQA officially began in 1988. The Ontario VQA encouraged the British Columbia wine industry to undertake a similar VQA program, which the province did in 1990. There are two distinct wine-producing regions in Canada : the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia. The VQA recognizes three Designated Viticultural Areas in Ontario, and four in British Columbia. EPThe VQA in Ontario is an independent alliance of wineries, grape growers, the provincial liquor regulator(the Liquor Control Board of Ontario), and academic, hospitality, and research institutions.

Beginning in 2000, a group of concerned citizens met regularly to discuss models of protection for the Ottawa River. In 2001, they formed a board of directors and started Ottawa Riverkeeper, the third waterkeeper program in Canada to be licensed by the international Waterkeeper Alliance.... The citizen-based Ottawa Riverkeeper is the voice that works to protect and enhance the ecological health and integrity of the Ottawa River system. Through expert, independent action Ottawa Riverkeeper encourages responsible decision-making, public education and participation, and compliance with existing protection regulations throughout the watershed. Ottawa Riverkeeper is an independent science-based organization concerned first and foremost with the protection of the Ottawa River's ecological integrity. Our objectives are to achieve a healthy, ecologically sustainable Ottawa River available for the enjoyment and benefit of its Ontario and Québec communities; and to work independently as well as co-operatively with individuals, businesses, community groups and all levels of government on both sides of the river to achieve our mission.
