2, record 2, French, - port%C3%A9e%20optique%20m%C3%A9t%C3%A9orologique

Atomic-force microscopy is similar to scanning-tunneling microscopy(STM) in that it can image surfaces at atomic-scale resolution. The difference between AFM and STM is that AFM does not require that the sample be an electrically conducting material. Like STM, it uses an atomically-sharp tip that is brought very close to the surface. The tip will feel a chemical attraction or repulsion and will move up or down on its supporting cantilever. This movement is monitored by an optical laser beam as the tip is moved laterally across the surface. As in STM, rastering the tip across the surface produces a topographic map of the surface. 3, record 5, English, - atomic%20force%20microscopy

1, record 24, French, - r%C3%A9pulsion%20st%C3%A9rique

A relatively new optical storage technology which combines laser and magnetic methods to read and write from a platter. Information stored by local magnetization of a magnetic medium, using a focused light beam to produce local heating and consequent reduction of coercivity so that a moderately strong, poorly localized magnetic field can flip the state of a small region of high coercivity material. Reading is done either magnetically, with inductive heads in close proximity to the medium, or optically, through rotation of the plane of polarization of probing light via the Faraday effect or Kerr effect. 4, record 25, English, - magneto%2Doptical%20storage

2, record 25, French, - m%C3%A9moire%20magn%C3%A9to%2Doptique

For example, using a source with a tunable wavelenngth, the measurement of the current induced by the near-field optical beam can provide information about the composition and electronic structure of semiconductors and biomaterials. 1, record 27, English, - optically%20active%20material

[Optical isomers] take their name from their effect of rotating the plane of polarization of a beam of polarized light that is directed through them : one member of each pair causes rotation in one direction, the other in the opposite direction. This phenomenon, called optical activity, arises from any of several kinds of imbalance in the three-dimensional structure of the molecule that cause it to have no point, line, or plane of symmetry. 2, record 29, English, - optical%20activity

A confocal laser scanning microscope is a light microscope having a dramatically higher axial resolution than a conventional microscope. In other words, a confocal microscope is capable of optical sectioning. This is accomplished by illuminating the specimen one point at a time with a focused laser beam and using an optical arrangement, where only the light originating from the focus can be detected. The image is formed by scanning the laser beam over the specimen and recording the image into computer memory. A three-dimensional view of the specimen can be reconstructed from a stack of such images taken at successive focal planes. 2, record 32, English, - axial%20resolution

(from several hundred to over one thousand lines etched per millimeter!) A famous physicist ...

A light beam traveling in one direction is advanced in phase, while a light beam traveling in the other direction is retarded in phase. Reversing the magnetic field reverses the effect.

The mechanical structure integrity of the gyro is based on a 1. 2 X1. 2 meter block of zerodur. The zerodur is a glass ceramic material with a thickness of 180 mm weighing approximately 600 kg. The block has four 1-meter longitudinal bores provided for the laser beam paths. Folding mirrors are mounted at each of the four corners of the block. This forms a closed square resonator in which the laser beams can travel in both directions. The block was produced by Zeiss Glaswerke of Mainz, Germany. At Zeiss the machining process included cutting the gyro body edges in preparation for the mounting of the folding mirrors. The surfaces for the mirror mounting are optically polished allowing the folding mirrors to be attached directly to the zerodur by optical contact rather than by bonding. 3, record 61, English, - gyro%20body

1, record 70, French, - pi%C3%A9geage%20optique

Both radio broadcasting and fiber optic systems require three essential elements : a transmitter, a transmission medium and a receiver. Instead of a radio wave transmitter and modulator to set the broadcast frequency and power the signal through the air, optical systems use modulators to establish an optical frequency, or channel, on a laser beam and feed it through a fiber. An optical frequency receiver then collects the messages, much in the manner of a radio set. And, just as tunable radio receivers let listeners select from among a number of stations, a tunable receiver for fiber optic communication is highly desirable. 2, record 74, English, - optical%20frequency

Light patterns : A Los Angeles-based company, Light Signatures, Inc., creates its fingerprints by extracting random patterns inherent within the product itself. A computerized processor passes a high-intensity light beam through a paper label to be affixed to merchandise. The processor captures a picture of the tangled web of fibers in the paper, digitizes it and converts it into a number, which is printed on the label. Forgers can copy the numbers on the labels, but they can’t match the code to the fiber pattern. To check suspect goods, a manufacturer sends the labels back to Light Signatures, which compares their optical fingerprints to the numbered images. If the two don’t match, the labels-and probably the goods-are fake. 4, record 77, English, - optical%20fingerprint

Interferometric Refractometer. A third type of refractometer(Optilab) uses the shearing-interferometer principle for measurement.... The light source beam(e. g. 546 nm) is divided into two parts by a beam splitter, and fall on the detector. The difference in refractive index between the sample and the reference produces a difference in optical path length and this is measured by the interferometer in fractions of light wavelengths. Response of this device is linear, and the sensitivity is claimed by the manufacturer to be 10-fold greater than other RI detectors. 1, record 82, English, - interferometric%20refractometer
