Optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMD) find myriads of applications from scientific visualization to defense applications, from medical visualization to engineering processes, and from training to entertainment. In mixed or augmented reality systems, OST-HMDs have been one of the basic vehicles for combining computer-generated virtual scene with the views of a real-world scene. Typically through an optical combiner, an OST-HMD maintains a direct view of the physical world and optically superimposes computer-generated images onto the real scene. Compared with a video see-through approach where the real-world views are captured through cameras, it has the advantage of introducing minimal degradation to the real world scene. Therefore an OST-HMD is preferred for applications where a non-blocked real-world view is critical. 1, record 1, English, - optical%20see%2Dthrough%20head%20mounted%20display

An augmented reality system comprises a real reference generator for displaying a real reference on a calibration screen, an optical see-through display having a fixed position with respect to the real reference generator and a virtual reference generator for displaying a virtual reference on the optical see-through display. The augmented reality system further comprises an input device for aligning a view of the virtual reference with a view of the real reference through the optical see-through display, wherein the virtual reference is moved on the optical see-through display, and a processor for determining one or more parameters for rendering a virtual object as part of a real scene seen through the optical see-through display. 4, record 1, English, - optical%20see%2Dthrough%20head%20mounted%20display

When a light-emitting diode is forward-biased(switched on), electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence and the color of the light(corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy gap of the semiconductor. LEDs are often small in area(less than 1 mm), and integrated optical components may be used to shape their radiation pattern. 5, record 28, English, - light%2Demitting%20diode

SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size. 3, record 29, English, - scanning%20interferometric%20apertureless%20microscope

1, record 29, French, - SIAM

[The] optical demultiplexer takes a stream of data moving at 40 gigabits per second and breaks it into separate lower-speed transmissions. The signals move through the loop of optical fiber in opposite directions. A train of control pulses and the clockwise pulses interact with one another because of certain nonlinear physical properties in the fiber. This interplay of light pulses changes the phase of some of the clockwise pulses. 2, record 90, French, - impulsion%20lumineuse

Interferometric Refractometer. A third type of refractometer(Optilab) uses the shearing-interferometer principle for measurement.... The light source beam(e. g. 546 nm) is divided into two parts by a beam splitter, and fall on the detector. The difference in refractive index between the sample and the reference produces a difference in optical path length and this is measured by the interferometer in fractions of light wavelengths. Response of this device is linear, and the sensitivity is claimed by the manufacturer to be 10-fold greater than other RI detectors. 1, record 96, English, - interferometric%20refractometer

Want to keep a close eye on how much time your kids spend in front of the television set? Look for a new device called TimeSlot, invented by three North Carolinians. By using what the inventors call an administrator card, which gives access to a control unit attached to the set's power cord, parents can program both the hours in which the television may be turned on and the amount of time their children may watch. Each child gets his or her own bar-coded card, which he or she inserts into the control unit when ready to watch TV. An optical scanner inside the book-sized device reads the card and triggers a clock to start counting down the time allotted the child. It shuts off the set when time runs out. 1, record 98, English, - TimeSlot
