The importance of oceans and the life within them is often understated. Oceans make up 71% of the Earth's surface, and produce 50-80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere... A majority of this oxygen is produced by microscopic free-floating plants, also known as phytoplankton, which account for the majority of bottom trophic level production in most marine ecosystems. A large number of marine food webs are under "bottom-up" control, in which the quantity of primary production controls the abundance of individuals within trophic levels and their biomass. The Arctic marine ecosystem is thought to be under bottom-up control, where primary production is largely limited by advective nutrient supply from adjacent oceans... 2, record 3, English, - lower%20trophic%20level%20production

Winterkill is the most common type of fish kill. When severe, it has devastating effects on fish populations and fishing quality. Winterkill occurs during especially long, harsh winters... Winterkill begins with distressed fish gasping for air at holes in the ice and ends with large numbers of dead fish which bloat as the water warms in early spring.... During periods of prolonged ice cover, the lake is sealed off from the atmosphere and cannot be recharged with oxygenated air. Furthermore, ice and snow reduce the amount of sunlight reaching aquatic plants, thereby reducing photosynthesis and oxygen production. 4, record 4, English, - fish%20winterkill

Throughout the world, the basic oxygen furnace(BOF) produces more steel than any other process, and it is the primary steel production method in the United States. While the basic oxygen furnace is an improvement over the earlier open hearth and Bessemer processes, the vessel for converting pig iron into steel in a basic oxygen furnace is similar in design to its predecessor, the Bessemer converter. There is no heat source associated with the converter; it relies on the exothermic reaction between iron and oxygen. Therefore, a basic oxygen converter is not a furnace. However, there are some vessels that may use an additional hydrocarbon heat source. 2, record 9, English, - basic%20oxygen%20furnace

The combined cycle in the Puertollano plant... can be operated both with natural gas and synthesis gas. The main features are : A 200 MWe(ISO) Siemens model V94. 3 gas turbine. A three-pressure level and IP steam reheating heat recovery steam generator designed by Babcock able to additionally superheat the steam generated through raw gas cooling in the gasification. A two casing reheat steam turbine designed by Siemens that delivers roughly 135 MWe. The clean coal gas is burned by the coal gas burners in the combustion chamber of the gas turbine. The sensible heat of extracted air is used for clean gas saturation, low pressure steam production and preheating of impure nitrogen. Preparation of bleach chemicals. All conventional bleaching chemicals can be produced from air, water and brine(NaCl solution) utilizing varying amounts of energy. Since the raw materials are cheap, it follows that manufacturing costs are mainly a function of how much energy is expended. Oxygen. Two systems are utilized for oxygen generation : cryogenic air separation and absorption-based separation.... The adsorption-based oxygen plant yields a gas product and is suitable only for onsite generation.... adsorption systems separate air at ambient temperatures using molecular sieve adsorbents. The adsorbent picks up nitrogen and other impurities at the system feed pressure, while the product oxygen passes straight through the bed. After the bed is saturated with nitrogen, it is regenerated by lowering the pressure to release the adsorbed components. Adsorption processes are cyclical, and multiple beds are used to maintain continuous oxygen production. 1, record 42, English, - adsorption%2Dbased%20separation

The use of growing cells in suspension as biocatalysts is generally termed fermentation. Such processes may be distinguished as batch, fed batch or continuous depending on the kinetic relationship between addition of substrate and harvesting of product. Non-growing systems include the use of suspensions, cells retained within a semipermeable membrane, or cells immobilized in or on a solid support. Such immobilized cells may be used in a fixed bed, expanded bed, fluid bed or fully mixed system.... Although many so-called fermentation reactions are carried out under aerobic conditions, these are of little interest in the present context since, when oxygen is used as the terminal electron acceptor, the production of low molecular weight metabolites of the type required is restricted and a high proportion of the carbon in the feedstock is converted into cell biomass. 1, record 43, English, - cell%20biomass
