CONT

The oxygen sensor(also known as an O2 sensor, lambda sensor, or EGO sensor) is one of the most critical sensors on a fuel-injected engine. It resembles a spark plug and is located in the exhaust manifold between the turbo and catalytic converter. When at operating temperature it becomes a miniature battery which generates a voltage based on the differential between the oxygen content of the exhaust gas and the oxygen content of the ambient air. By this method it measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream, allowing the ECM to compensate to some degree for various fuel grades, engine wear, altitude changes, usage of oxygenated fuel, and more. Another big benefit is the ability to keep emissions of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and unburned hydrocarbons as low as possible.

OBS

oxygen sensor : term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee(New Brunswick).

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Ignition Systems (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

There is clear agreement among the manufacturers that the basic emission control approach will be the closed-loop, three-way catalyst system. In addition to the catalyst, the typical system will consist of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR), air injection(pulse air in light vehicles, air pump in heavy vehicles), oxygen sensor, micro-computer, and feed-back carburator or electronic fuel injection.

The Gas Analyzer System for Metabolic Analysis Physiology(GASMAP) device is used to monitor and analyze inhaled and exhaled breath streams to determine their gas concentrations. The primary gases of interest are nitrogen(N²), oxygen(O²), carbon dioxide(CO²), argon(Ar), acetylene(C²H²), sulfur hexafluoride(SF6), helium(He), and carbon monoxide(C18 O). The GASMAP flight hardware consists of two components : an analyzer module and a calibration module, both of which are housed in drawers inside Spacelab. The analyzer module contains all the sensor and electronic hardware of the GASMAP.
