Pandemic influenza is a global epidemic that can happen at any time of the year. It typically occurs [three to four] times each century when a completely new strain of influenza type A virus emerges. People generally do not have any natural immunity, that is, protection against a pandemic virus. The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges to healthcare services. Concerns about hospital services being overwhelmed led National Health Service(NHS) institutions to develop novel approaches to caring for patients with suspected COVID-19. These include virtual hospitals(VH) where patients who have come to the attention of hospital services and need close monitoring, but do not necessarily need inpatient care, are followed remotely by hospital-based clinicians. VHs are particularly valuable during periods of high disease prevalence, when inpatient hospital services are struggling to cope. 1, record 5, English, - virtual%20hospital

CanCOVID was established in March 2020 with the support of... the federal government's Chief Science Advisor... in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the guidance of an intersectoral committee, the organization grew to link over 2400 members of Canada's research community using digital networking tools. CanCOVID members have been able to collaborate across critical research and development areas, from clinical trials and testing, to diagnostics and treatment. With the support of the Government of Canada, CanCOVID has formed five key thematic research networks, based on priorities developed in collaboration with the government. These thematic research networks will address the government's key questions as they develop policy. 1, record 12, English, - CanCOVID

Different circulating influenza A viruses are identified by referring to two signature proteins on their surfaces. One is hemagglutinin(HA), which has at least 15 known variants, or subtypes. Another is neurominidase(NA), which has nine subtypes. Exposure to these proteins produces distinctive antibodies in a host, thus the 1918 strain was the first to be named, "H1N1", based on antibodies found in the bloodstream of pandemic survivors. 4, record 83, English, - H1N1%20strain

Because the 1957 and 1968 pandemic strains had avian-like HA [hemagglutinin] proteins, it seems most likely that they originated in the direct reassortment of avian and human virus strains. The actual circumstances of those reassortment events have never been identified, however, so no one knows how long it took for the novel strains to develop into human pandemics. The 1918 pandemic strain is even more puzzling, because its gene sequences are consistent neither with direct reassortment from a known avian strain nor with adaptation of an avian strain in swine. 2, record 85, English, - direct%20reassortment

5, record 87, French, - r%C3%A9assortiment

The Spanish flu pandemic is the catastrophe against which all modern pandemics are measured. Many people died from this very quickly. Some people who felt well in the morning became sick by noon, and were dead by nightfall. Those who did not succumb to the disease within the first few days often died of complications from the flu(such as pneumonia) caused by bacteria. One of the most unusual aspects of the Spanish flu was its ability to kill young adults. 2, record 88, English, - Spanish%20influenza

Knowing which vaccine to stockpile before the outbreak of a pandemic is a major problem, because you don’t know which virus will cause the pandemic. It takes months to make enough vaccine for all potential victims, and flu vaccines only last about 12 months in storage.... There are also some technical problems with making a H5N1 vaccine. H5N1 kills chickens, so the usual way of making a vaccine that relies on chicken eggs doesn’t work very well. In a pandemic situation, speed in vaccine development, authorisation and distribution will be crucial.... A core pandemic dossier is submitted and approved during the inter-pandemic period, the period between two pandemics.
