Pandemic influenza is a global epidemic that can happen at any time of the year. It typically occurs [three to four] times each century when a completely new strain of influenza type A virus emerges. People generally do not have any natural immunity, that is, protection against a pandemic virus. If this new virus spreads easily from person to person, it could quickly travel around the world. 3, record 2, English, - pandemic%20influenza

This project aims to strengthen the pandemic readiness of the Pan-American Health Organization(PAHO) member countries in 2009 and 2010. It also aims to address the current emergency situation triggered by a new strain of the Influenza A(H1N1) 2009 virus, which has had an impact on public health care systems and economies in the Americas and globally. Taking into account the additional burden on existing weak public health care systems, this emergency situation requires the immediate bolstering of the response capacity of the affected member countries. 1, record 5, English, - Pan%2DAmerican%20Health%20Organization%20%28PAHO%29%20Immediate%20Response%20to%20the%20H1N1%20Influenza%20pandemic

1, record 5, French, - Organisation%20panam%C3%A9ricaine%20de%20la%20sant%C3%A9%20%2D%20R%C3%A9action%20imm%C3%A9diate%20%C3%A0%20la%20pand%C3%A9mie%20de%20grippe%20H1N1

Knowing which vaccine to stockpile before the outbreak of a pandemic is a major problem, because you don’t know which virus will cause the pandemic. It takes months to make enough vaccine for all potential victims, and flu vaccines only last about 12 months in storage.... There are also some technical problems with making a H5N1 vaccine. H5N1 kills chickens, so the usual way of making a vaccine that relies on chicken eggs doesn’t work very well. An alternative genetically engineered virus may need to be used to produce enough vaccine in a short period of time. 1, record 6, English, - genetically%20engineered%20virus

Because the 1957 and 1968 pandemic strains had avian-like HA [hemagglutinin] proteins, it seems most likely that they originated in the direct reassortment of avian and human virus strains. The actual circumstances of those reassortment events have never been identified, however, so no one knows how long it took for the novel strains to develop into human pandemics. The 1918 pandemic strain is even more puzzling, because its gene sequences are consistent neither with direct reassortment from a known avian strain nor with adaptation of an avian strain in swine. 2, record 7, English, - direct%20reassortment

1, record 7, French, - r%C3%A9assortiment%20direct

The following levels of preparedness are defined by WHO : preparedness level 1 : isolation of a novel virus subtype from a single human case, without clear evidence of spread of such a virus; preparedness level 2 : confirmation that two or more human infections have occurred with a new virus subtype, but without confirmation of human to human transmission; preparedness level 3 : human to human transmission confirmed. 1, record 8, English, - alert%20level
