Although most emissions of ambient air pollution are from local or regional sources, under certain atmospheric conditions air pollution can travel long distances across national borders over time scales of 4-6 days, thereby affecting people far away from its original source. For example, windblown dust from desert regions of Africa, Mongolia, Central Asia and China can carry large concentrations of particulate matter, fungal spores and bacteria that impact health and air quality in remote areas. 2, record 1, English, - ambient%20air%20pollution

Warm air has formed a layer on top of cooler surface air. This layer is called the temperature inversion. This means that temperatures actually rise as we measure farther up into the air. This point is referred to as the top of the inversion. Inversions can occur at the surface or aloft in the atmosphere. 5, record 4, English, - top%20of%20the%20inversion%20layer

"High Volume Air Sampler" : A filtering device for particulate collection, used by the National Air Pollution Control Administration to determine the concentrations of suspended particulates in American urban and rural areas. A glass-fiber medium is used which can filter at the rate of 70 cubic feet per minute. The filter is over 99 percent efficient for the collection of particles as fine as 0. 3 um [micrometers] in diameter. High Volume Air Samplers generally run as long as 24 hours without an appreciable increase in airflow resistance. 1, record 13, English, - high%20volume%20air%20sampler

In order to estimate the efficiency requirements of air pollution control equipment necessary to control emissions from an industrial or other polluter, both the quality of the particulate matter in the exit gases and the size of the particulates are determining factors. Thus, quantitative assessment of the amount and qualitative examination of the type of particulates enables the designer to estimate the particulate loading in a specific case. 1, record 14, English, - particulate%20loading

3, record 14, French, - charge%20de%20particules

Much of the mineral particulate matter in a polluted atmosphere is in the form of oxides and other compounds produced during the combustion of high-ash fossil fuel. Most of the mineral matter... presents no air pollution problems. Smaller ash particles called fly ash enter furnace flues and, in a properly equipped stack system, are collected efficiently. However, some of the fly ash particles escape through the stack and enter the atmosphere. 1, record 15, English, - mineral%20particulate%20matter
