In the NRC [National Research Council of Canada] Solvent Extraction Soil Remediation(SESR) Process, solvent extraction of the soil contaminant(s) occurs concurrently with agglomeration of the dispersed soil particles. Soil is initially mixed with a bulk liquid phase which must be a good solvent for the contaminant but be non-wetting with respect to the particulate surfaces. A minor amount of a second liquid is added which must be immiscible with the suspending phase but preferentially wet the soil particles. For the remediation of contaminated soils the two liquids of choice are a hydrocarbon solvent and water, respectively. 1, record 2, English, - solvent%20extraction%20soil%20remediation%20process

Solvent extraction soil remediation (SESR) is an ex situ process which uses an innovative liquid phase agglomeration (LPA) step to separate fine, dispersed particles from the extracting solvent. ... Solvent extraction soil remediation (SESR) is ideally suited to treat soils, sediments and sludges contaminated with a wide variety of organic materials such as PCBs, pesticides, herbicides, PAHs, coal tar wastes, drilling muds, crude oils, and so forth. More importantly it can treat these materials when the solid matrix contains significant amounts of fine particles, including clay and clay-like materials. 3, record 2, English, - solvent%20extraction%20soil%20remediation%20process

1, record 2, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20de%20restauration%20des%20sols%20par%20extraction%20au%20solvant

An apparatus used for a process in which the molecules of either a gas or liquid are captured by solid material. Usually the capturing solid is activated carbon, which has a large surface area of capillary form (the carbon can be regenerated by steam, which drives off the adsorbed material in the form of a vapor that can be condensed along with the steam). 2, record 3, English, - adsorber

Devices in which contaminant gases or vapors are retained on the surface of the porous media through which the carrier gas flows are adsorbers. The media most commonly used is activated carbon. The design of an adsorber is similar to that of a filter for particulate matter in that the gas flows through a porous bed. 3, record 3, English, - adsorber

Fumes are very small, airborne, solid particles formed by the cooling of a hot vapour. For example, a hot zinc vapour may form when zinc-coated steel is welded. The vapour then condenses to form fine zinc fume as soon as it contacts the cool surrounding air. Fumes are smaller than dusts and are more easily breathed into the lungs. 1, record 4, English, - zinc%20fume

There are a least seven forms of particulate matter.... "Fume" : Solid particles generated by condensation from the gaseous state, generally after volatilization from melted substances and often accompanied by a chemical reaction, such as oxidation. Popular usage sometimes includes any type of contaminant. 2, record 4, English, - zinc%20fume
