  • Road Traffic
CONT

The Low Emission Zone(LEZ) was introduced in 2008 to encourage the most polluting heavy diesel vehicles driving in the Capital to become cleaner. The LEZ covers most of Greater London. To drive within it without paying a daily charge these vehicles must meet certain emissions standards that limit the amount of particulate matter(a type of pollution) coming from their exhausts.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
  • Pollutants
  • Mining Wastes
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
DEF

The particulates in suspended form in gases, or in the form of aerosols, which are introduced into the ambient air from the mouth of a stack, a flue or a tailpipe.

CONT

Particulate matter emissions generally come from industrial sources, stationary fuel combustion, and miscellaneous sectors. The overall decline in particulate emissions has been 8% and the industrial share of total particulate matter emissions declined from 70% in 1970 to 64% in 1980. The increase in the share in stationary fuel combustion and miscellaneous sectors was quite small.

CONT

The highest emission of particulate matter(fly ash and soot) is derived from the combustion of coal.

OBS

Particulates are any finely divided solid or liquid particles in the air or in an emission. Particulates include dust, smoke, fumes, and mist.

OBS

particulates: Generic term used interchangeably with "dust" to describe fine solid matter capable of entering atmospheric suspension.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pollution de l'air
  • Agents de pollution
  • Déchets miniers
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
CONT

CONT

In Canada, diesel-powered passenger cars are subject to the same emission standards as gasoline powered cars. Little, if any, additional emission control equipment need be installed on diesel-powered cars sold in Canada to meet the 1981 U. S. standard which has no requirement for particulate emissions.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Radiography (Medicine)
DEF

An isomer of technetium 99 that decays by isomeric transition, with a half-life of 6 hours.

OBS

It is particularly useful as a radiotracer in medical work because it is readily available from small laboratory generators, it forms complexes with many chemical or pharmacologic vectors, the gamma emission is in the energy range(140 KeV) favorable for scintigraphic work, the limited particulate emission restricts the radiation penalty to a patient, and its half-life makes it suitable for many clinical and research purposes. Symbol :99mTc.

Key term(s)
  • 99m Tc

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Radiographie (Médecine)
CONT

CONT

Stone dust, fly ash, soot, and unburned droplets of fuel oil are the main types of particulate resulting from the operations of hot-mix asphalt paving plants. The predominant particulate emission is stone dust and its major source is the dryer. Other sources of particulate emissions include the screens, open bucket elevators, weigh hoppers, asphalt heaters, storage piles and bins, and traffic dust from the yard. Particulates from the dryer are normally termed "dryer dust", those from the screen cover, weigh and mix area, and hot material elevator are usually called "fugitive dust".
