The hydraulic needle effect is an important factor to consider when employing OC [oleoresin capsicum]. This is the consequence of the OC particulates penetrating the soft tissue of the eye. This is due to the correlation between the distance and the amount of pressure(size of the canister) in which it is delivered. Concerns have been raised about the possibility of soft tissue injury, prolonged irritation or possibly infection. Because of the possibility of the hydraulic needle effect, minimum safe distances have been established for each delivery system. 2, record 7, English, - hydraulic%20needle%20effect

The concentration of a contaminant refers to its quantity in the air. For gaseous contaminants, the concentration is expressed as a ratio of the volume of contaminants present in one billion volumes of air, or ppb. A similar unit is the parts per ten million, or pptm. One pptm consists of 100 ppb. For particulates, the concentration is expressed as a ratio of the mass of the particulates present in one cubic metre(m³) of air. The unit used for the mass is the microgram²(or µg), so the concentration is expressed in units of mg/m. 2, record 11, English, - part%20per%20ten%20million

Rainout(or snowout), which is the in-cloud capture of particulates as condensation nuclei, is one form of scavenging. The other form is washout, the below-cloud capture of particulates and gaseous pollutants by falling raindrops. Large particles are most efficiently removed by washout. Small particles(especially those less than 1 m in diameter) more easily follow the airstream flowing around raindrops and generally avoid capture by raindrops except in heavy rain events. 9, record 12, English, - scavenging%20by%20precipitation

The boilers are fed wood fuel from the main fuel bin located adjacent to the boiler house. The boilers are the "pile burner" type, which burn wood in a large pile on the floor of a refractory lined furnace box. Combustion efficiency with this type of boiler is generally low but pile burners are simple and therefore relatively inexpensive. Low combustion efficiency also means that emissions such as particulates and carbon monoxide are relatively high. One notable advantage to these systems is that high moisture content fuels can be burned as well as "dirty" fuels containing debris. 3, record 21, English, - pile%20burner

Pile burner: Boilers incorporating a pile burning design find applications where the anticipated wood fuel has a high (up to 65%) relative moisture content, as is found in whole green tree chips, bark, and green mill residue. Grates serve to support the fuel, and underfire air flowing up through the grates provides oxygen for combustion, cools the grates, promotes turbulence in the fuel bed, and dries the fuel. The most common form of pile burning is the Dutch oven, which was used almost exclusively during the early part of the century (Guinn and Turner 1990). 4, record 21, English, - pile%20burner

7, record 33, French, - coefficient%20de%20transmission

Basic system operation and performance allow for the processing of contaminated JP-5 fuel that consists of any combination of particulates, water, and aviation fuel. Contaminated fuel is loaded into the process tank via a defueler truck used to collect the segregated JP-5 from squadron hazardous waste storage sites. The fuel is circulated at 15 gpm through the system until it is determined to be visually clean via a sampling port. A gravity drain valve allows for the discharge of wastewater stripped from the fuel during circulation. Depending on the level of particulate contamination, the fuel may be considered clean(less than 2mg/1 particulates, less than 5ppm free water) after one pass through the system or several. Low-level radioactive wastes can exist in solid liquid or gaseous form. Any solid waste may give off a radioactive gas, as in the case of Radium 226 which gives off Radon 222 when it undergoes alpha decay. Water flowing through a solid waste may leach out soluble radioactive material(e. g., the acid leachates of some uranium mine tailings). As well, solid fine particulates of radioactive waste may take the form of a dust and be carried away on the wind, as in the case in the erosion of mine tailings. Equally, non-radioactive dust particles in the atmosphere can be contaminated with radon daughters as a result of electrostatic attraction. Filter Sampling. Filter material impregnated with reagents for specific gases can be used for atmospheric sampling. One of the more common techniques of this kind is the paper tape sampler. A roll of paper tape is impregnated and dried. The tape is then placed in a mechanical unit which sequences a tape section into position for sampling. An example will illustrate the futility of attempting to control welding smoke in a production area by means of a ceiling exhaust fan. Assume: (1) Exhaust fan, 15 ft over work area and directly overhead, (2) fan capacity 20,000 cfm, and (3) exhaust opening 5 ft in diameter. Calculate the velocity of air movement at one diameter, or 5 ft from the opening. The minimum capture velocity necessary to control welding smoke is 100 fpm. Yet at a point only 5 ft from the fan opening the velocity has decreased from approximately 1000 fpm to 75 fpm and the welking smoke is still 10 ft away. 2, record 71, English, - capture%20velocity

A measure of the cleanliness of air is the atmospheric visibility. That visibility is generally degraded by atmospheric aerosols. The nephelometer is a device which measures the light scattering capability of the atmosphere and thus provides a measure of visibility. The light source in an integrating nephelometer provides excitation for particulates which scatter light into a cone between 10 and 170 degrees of the optic axis. The scattered light is detected with a photomultiplier. The signal is proportional to the scattering coefficient of the aerosol and empirical relations are available to relate this measure to the mass concentration of ambient aerosols. 1, record 72, English, - integrating%20nephelometer

Filter Sampling. Particulates are extremely varied for their composition. The monitoring of particulates with High Volume(Hi-Vol) samplers and other filter media varies from a simple colorimetric measure of the coefficient of haze(CoH) to the use of neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, etc. for metal concentrations and gas chromatography for organic composition.
