Subject field(s)

  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Air Pollution
CONT

Pasquill’s stability classification scheme was developed to describe dispersion conditions using routinely-available, surfaced-based measurements of wind speed, cloud cover and insolation, and more practically to specify the diffusion parameters [sigma]y and [sigma]z (standard deviations of horizontal and vertical pollutant spread) used in the Gaussian plume model.

Pour prendre en compte l'effet des conditions de stabilité sur la dispersion, il est envisagé [...] d'utiliser la classification de stabilité de Pasquill qui dépend essentiellement du rayonnement et de la vitesse du vent [...]

CONT

D.B. Turner (1961) introduced a version of Pasquill’s scheme in which the incoming solar radiation is classified in terms of elevation angle, cloud amount and cloud height. This stability classification system has been made completely objective so that an electronic computer can be used to compute stability classes. The stability classes proposed by Turner are as follows : A = extremely unstable; B = unstable; C = slightly unstable; D = neutral; E = slightly stable; F = stable, and G = extremely stable.
