Subject field(s)
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Morphology and General Physiology
  • Birds
CONT

The beak [of a Dragoon pigeon] is very powerful and must be quite blunt. Both mandibles should be stout, straight, of proportionate width, of equal substance, and close fitting. Everytime [one sees] a Dragoon, [one has] to be amazed, particularly by the powerful lower mandible. This lower mandible... is especially seen as a breed characteristic—and of course the beak must be well closed. The latter may require some extra attention from the breeder and often needs regular conditioning to ensure that the beak halves are perfectly aligned. The correct beak setting should have a continuing beak line pass under the eye.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aerodynamics and Theory of Gases
  • Wind Energy
DEF

An increase in wind speed induced by terrain features, such as the curvature of a hill.

CONT

Speed up effects : Tunnel effect. If you push an ordinary bicycle air pump,... you will notice that the air leaving the nozzle moves much faster than the speed with which you are pushing. The reason, of course, is that the nozzle is much narrower than the cylinder in the pump. If you take a walk between tall buildings, or in a narrow mountain pass, you will notice that the same effect is working : the air becomes compressed on the windy side of the buildings or mountains, and its speed increases considerably between the obstacles to the wind. This is known as a "tunnel effect. "So, even if the general wind speed in open terrain may be, say, 6 metres per second, it can easily reach 9 metres per second in a natural "tunnel. "Placing a wind turbine in such a tunnel is one clever way of obtaining higher wind speeds than in the surrounding areas.

Domaine(s)

  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Mechanical Components
  • Wind Energy
DEF

A speed-up effect created by wind pressure in a natural corridor which allows a wind turbine to harness wind kinetic energy stronger than in the surrounding area.

CONT

  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
CONT

Fixed ropes are of two kinds :(1) permanent ropes, chains or hawsers fixed to the populair routes of some Alpine peaks, and(2) ropes fixed by climbers during the course of an expedition lasting several weeks, enabling them to pass up and down the mountain quickly.

CONT

The [fixed] rope is attached by different kinds of anchor and remains in situ for the entire course of the climb.

CONT

[A] fixed rope [is] a rope that is permanently attached to a sound anchor to provide, normally, a quick and relatively safe descent or ascent over a dangerous or difficult section of rock ... The function is basically that of a safety line.

OBS

From the documentation consulted, it is not clear whether the concept, in French, ’corde fixe’, can include or be something other than rope as in English.

CONT

The artist stretches a piece of fine silk over a wooden frame and then glues a design in the form of a stencil to the fabric. Paint(or silkscreen ink) is then forced through the screen onto a sheet of paper below by means of a squeegee. The uncovered areas of fabric will, of course, allow the paint to pass through, while the areas covered by the cut stencil will not.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sérigraphie
CONT
