Chinook is a Blackfoot word that translates to "snow eater", referring to, its ability to make winter snow packs vanish over a short time. The Chinook is a foehn wind; a generic term for all winds that have been warmed and dried by descent off a slope. The Chinook occurs over the front range of the Rocky Mountains and western plains of North America. They usually blow from the southwest to west and are quite strong, often 25-40 knots with gusts as high as 80 knots. Their effects are most strongly felt in southwestern Alberta where they funnel through the Crowsnest Pass before fanning out across southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. 3, record 3, English, - chinook

1, record 5, Spanish, - anomal%C3%ADa%20del%20Atl%C3%A1ntico%20Sur

A city of the Yukon Territory and its capital since 1953, located at kilometre 1476, just off the Alaska Highway. The city lies mainly on the western side of the Yukon River, nestled in a protected valley surrounded by Canyon Mountain(locally known as Grey Mountain) to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn Mountain to the south. Located at the head of navigation on the Yukon River, Whitehorse grew significantly by becoming a temporary stopping point--past two major obstacles on the river, Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids--for prospectors heading for Dawson(then known as "Dawson City") during the Klondike Gold Rush Years(1897-1899). In 1900, with the completion of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway from Skagway in Alaska, to Carcross and Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, the community grew around the point where the railway and river met, on the western side of the Yukon River. After the gold rush, Whitehorse's population dropped, but with the help of navigation and aviation companies, the British Yukon Navigation Company building riverboats and operating them to Dawson until 1954, and the British Yukon Aviation Company transporting mail, freight and passengers, the economy was kept afloat. During World War II, Whitehorse played a significant role as a key link in the north-south transportation system, hosting the Americans and Canadians in charge of expanding the air link that was the Northwest Staging Route(a series of airfields across the Northwest), building the 2300-km Alaska Highway, or constructing the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, N. W. T., and an oil refinery at Whitehorse. In 1950, Whitehorse was incorporated as a city. In 1953, the territorial capital of the Yukon was moved from Dawson to Whitehorse, adding the government sector to an economy made of the mining(copper, silver and lead-zinc), tourist and oil industries. Though the mines shut down in Yukon and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ended its operations 2, record 9, English, - Whitehorse

Carbon dioxide(CO2) is a normal component of the Earth's atmosphere. [It] allows short wavelength solar radiation to pass through the atmosphere and heat the Earth.... CO2 is an integral part of the plant photosynthesis process. Plants absorb CO2 during the day as they generate energy, and they give off CO2 at night as they respire or use energy. A certain proportion of the CO2 is used to build new organic tissue so that there is a net negative flux of CO2 between plants and the atmosphere. This is later balanced after plants die and their organic material is decomposed. 1, record 11, English, - net%20negative%20flux

The general practice in Canada is to use only one cleaning passage for the blend. The first cleaning machine is a milling separator, similar to the receiving separator used in the elevator, but more precise in its ability to separate impurities that are larger and smaller than wheat. The top sieve has large perforations about six millimetres in diameter and the bottom sieve has holes two millimetres in diameter. As the grain passes through the machine, large impurities such as corn, soybeans and unthreshed wheat are removed by the top screen, while the finer bottom sieve allows small impurities such as mustard seed, buckwheat and sand to pass through for separate collection. The partially cleaned wheat tails over the finer sieve. As it falls off the end of the sieve, it is aspirated by air currents that remove chaff and dust to a separate outlet. 1, record 14, English, - milling%20separator

1, record 14, French, - s%C3%A9parateur%20de%20mouture

Why is the sky blue?... Scattering, simply defined, is when light hitting a volume of air is reflected out of the air, as opposed to being absorbed or just passing through. The light bounces off of individual air particles in random directions, scattering, and making that air appear the color of the light being scattered. Preferential light scattering means that some colors of light scatter better, while other colors tend only to pass through. Lord Rayleigh, a 19th century British physicist, first explained preferential light scattering.(Sir Isaac Newton first established the phenomenon's existence.) Common air particle diameters are 1 micron(micrometer),. 1 micron, and. 01 micron.... "Rayleigh's Law indicates that the light energy scattered per unit volume of air containing particles smaller than. 1 micron is inversely proportional to the 4th power of the wavelength of the illuminating radiation(Schaeffer 155) "... More simply stated, the amount of light that bounces around in our air increases as the wavelength(which is related to color) of the light decreases. 2, record 15, English, - Rayleigh%20Law

Rapid plows. The Loebbehobel is a rapid plow which is equipped with three or four protruding picks or bits. The plow is double-ended and cuts as it traverses in each direction along the face. The machine normally travels at a speed of about 75 ft/min and takes a slice of coal 3-4 in. thick off the face at each pass. It is pulled to and fro by an endless chain which is driven by the gearheads at each end of the armored conveyor. Maximum pulling force is about 20 tons. This machine is capable of working in seams 1 ft 8 in. thick up to 7 ft thick and can produce, load, and deliver to a gate conveyor from 1. 5 to 5 tons/min. The plow works well in seams which are soft or are hard but friable but will not work well in coal which is "tough" or "woody". 1, record 19, English, - rapid%20plow
