Subject field(s)
  • Vacuum Tubes (Electronics)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
DEF

In radar practice, a type of gas-filled electron tube that automatically permits transmit signals to reach the antenna while keeping them from the receiver, but allows received signals to reach the receiver easily.

CONT

The radar receiver follows the transmit-receive tube, which shorts the input during the transmitter pulse. Before the tube fires, it allows a spike of energy to pass. Some tubes require a "keep-alive voltage" in order to be able to fire at lower power levels to protect the receiver.

OBS

TR tube: term officially approved by the Electronics and Telecommunications Terminology Committee.

Record 6 2010-01-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
CONT

A sweep ramp provides the tuning voltage for a voltage-tuned oscillator and is simultaneously applied to the horizontal-deflection system of a cathode-ray-tube display. The local-oscillator frequency is mixed with the input signal to produce an intermediate frequency (IF). The IF is detected, filtered, and applied to the vertical deflection plates of the CRT [cathode-ray-tube].

CONT

The receiver has to have suitable pass band characteristics to deal with the pulse modulation side bands, and must be free from paralysis following reception of a large signal... Its output is rectified and amplified and applied to the cathode-ray tube display, either as a deflexion or an intensity modulation. The cathode-ray tube is also supplied with a range time base..., synchronized to the pulse transmission, and suitable calibration devices... are usually also necessary. The form of the display unit depends on the particular radar application, and on what coordinate or coordinates other than range are to be presented. For example, in the plan position indicator the time base starts from the centre of the tube and goes radically outwards in a direction depending on the azimuth of the beamed aerials(which sweeps continuously), and the signal is presented as a spot intensifier.

CONT

In conventional fashion, the anti-diffusion grid is composed of a series of plates that are all directed toward the focal point of X-ray radiation emitted in the direction of the object and of the image receiver. Thus, the anti-diffusion grid allows the undiffused direct beams to pass, while the diffused beams are absorbed by the plates.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Basketball
DEF

A ... pass ... that is used when you have a wide open player far down the court.

CONT

The baseball pass is most often used to advance the ball up the floor. The ball is held with both hands on the ball, one on either side with the throwing hand usually a little higher on the ball. The ball is cocked up near the ear to aid in a quick release. The passers hand must be BEHIND the ball so the pass doesn’t have too much side spin, making it hard to catch. The pass is made over the defense, leading the receiver.

CONT

The baseball pass is a good pass to make to a teammate streaking down the floor.

OBS

DEF

The use of the body above the knees by a defending or an attacking player in order to obstruct an opponent.

DEF

... an offensive weapon used to clear a path for the ball carrier.

OBS

The hands must be cupped or closed and kept inside the elbows and not outside the body of either player. Arms may not be extended to push. A blocker may not push, clamp down on, hang on, or encircle an opponent. Players may block an opponent at any time, provided this does not interfere with a pass, a fair catch, a kicker, or a passer and provided it is not too rough. A wide receiver may not be cut down by a block below the knees. A wide receiver may not block an opponent below the waist if he is blocking back toward the ball(crackback block).

OBS

The basic blocks are the cross-body block, in which the body is thrown across the opponent’s thighs, and the shoulder block, in which the shoulder does the work. It is permissible to block a player from a position in front of, or to the side of, him, but not use his hands, but the defensive player may use his to ward off or escape the blocker.

DEF

OBS

Si on utilise le substantif «slant» seul, il désigne un jeu au sol.
