CONT

... the scanning ion-conductance microscope (SICM) ... scans a sample not with a metal or diamond tip but with a glass micropipette containing a tiny electrode. The workers immerse the sample and the pipette in a bath of electrolyte (such as a salt solution) and establish a voltage difference between the electrode within the pipette and another electrode in the bath. A current of ions tends to flow between the electrodes by way of the pipette opening, but when the pipette approaches the surface of the sample, the current weakens. It disappears altogether when the scanned pipette touches the sample, which blocks the opening. Equipped with a feedback mechanism that maintains a constant ion current through the pipette opening, the SICM can profile a sample’s topography. The fineness of the pipette does limit the SICM’s resolution to about .2 micron (10 nanometers may eventually be feasible).

OBS

The device is therefore best suited to more specialized functions-studying a living cell' s electrical behavior, for example. When a cell is stimulated, so-called ion channels in its membrane open and close, allowing tiny currents of ions to pass. Hansma hopes to detect individual ion channels and study their behavior once the SICM's resolution has been improved.

CONT

The Multi-Channel Sea Surface Temperature(MCSST) data are derived from the 5-channel Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers(AVHRR) on board the NOAA-7,-9.-11 and-14 polar orbiting satellites. Weekly averaged data for both the ascending pass(daytime) and descending pass(nighttime) are provided on an equal-angle grid of 2048 pixels longitude by 1024 pixels latitude(nominally referred to as the 18km resolution). Data are provided in Hierarchical Data Format and in Raw Binary Format.

CONT

The multichannel sea surface temperature algorithm (MCSST) has been used to routinely calculate SSTs using a split window approach. Currently this algorithm is applied by the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) to calculate SSTs at a near real-time rate.

OBS

sea surface temperature: The temperature of the layer of sea water nearest the atmosphere.

DEF

A new television standard that uses digital signals rather than the current analog standard.

CONT

HDTV signals contain over 700 lines of resolution compared to the 525 lines of resolution that analog provides. HDTV also has a wider width to height of the screen for a true theater-like experience. The images are digitized and compressed before signal transmission to enable the tremendous quantity of information to pass through easily. The signals are then decompressed when they reach the television. The result is a clear, crisp picture that transcends any other picture formats.

DEF

A very high resolution mode where a radar beam is oriented on a target for a longer period of time, thus increasing the synthetic aperture length.

OBS

The three common SAR acquisition modes... : Stripmap SAR, Spotlight SAR, and ScanSAR.... A Spotlight SAR steers the antenna beam to continuously illuminate a certain region on ground much longer than in the Stripmap case [Carrara et al., 1995]. As a result, the azimuth bandwidth becomes larger, which hence may be exploited to increase the azimuth resolution.... It offers the possibility to measure different components of the surface current using only a single pass(in case of a spotlight single-pass interferometry configuration). To this purpose the total azimuth bandwidth is divided into different(e. g. two) non-overlapping parts which are processed separately with their individual optimum Doppler centroid values so that the resulting images represent observations from two different aspect angles. A spotlight system operated in that way provides data similar to a Dual-Beam ATI [Allied Telesyn International] configuration.

DEF
