A boiler in which the water to be vaporized is housed in a drum through which horizontal tubes (fire tubes) are run.

Fire-tube boilers may be designed for vertical, inclined, or horizontal positions. One of the most generally used types is the horizontal-return-tube(HRT) boiler. In the HRT boiler, part of the heat from the combustion gases is transferred directly to the lower portion of the shell. The gases then make a return pass through the horizontal tubes or flues before being passed into the stack.

The... horizontal return tube boiler... gets it's name from the horizontal fire tubes which run back-to-front through the lower half of the boiler drum. The gas burner is located under the front half of the boiler drum. The hot gases then pass to the rear of the fire box where they turn round and return to the front via the fire tubes and into the smoke box.(see this picture for a clearer description).

A superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) is a mechanism used to measure extremely weak signals, such as subtle changes in the human body’s electromagnetic energy field.

Using a device called a Josephson junction, a SQUID can detect a change of energy as much as 100 billion times weaker than the electromagnetic energy that moves a compass needle. A Josephson junction is made up of two superconductors, separated by an insulating layer so thin that electrons can pass through. A SQUID consists of tiny loops of superconductors employing Josephson junctions to achieve superposition : each electron moves simultaneously in both directions. Because the current is moving in two opposite directions, the electrons have the ability to perform as qubits(that theoretically could be used to enable quantum computing). SQUIDs have been used for a variety of testing purposes that demand extreme sensitivity, including engineering, medical, and geological equipment. Because they measure changes in a magnetic field with such sensitivity, they do not have to come in contact with a system that they are testing.

Les chinooks se produisent sur les chaînons frontaux des Rocheuses et l'ouest des plaines d'Amérique du Nord. Ils soufflent habituellement du sud-ouest ou de l'ouest et sont assez forts, souvent de 25 à 40 nœuds avec des rafales jusqu'à 80 nœuds. Leurs effets se font surtout sentir dans le sud-ouest de l'Alberta, où ils sont canalisés dans le col Crowsnest (pas du Nid-de-Corbeau) avant de se répandre dans le sud de l'Alberta et de la Saskatchewan.

Se cree que esto se debe al hecho de que el centro del campo magnético de la Tierra está desviado de su centro geográfico.
