The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 2, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

... There, he [Paul Emmett] sought out a better understanding of the mechanisms by which ammonia could be taken out of the air and turned into a fertilizer for plants. Emmett knew that the Germans had developed just such a mechanism during World War I, but scientists did not entirely understand how and why the process worked. The result of this investigation was the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) Method, which remains the second-most cited scientific paper on the process and a technique still in use worldwide. The BET Method provides scientists with the ability to measure a variety of properties of gas molecules on a solid surface : the surface area, the composition of the surface, and the amount of catalyst that is both on the surface and in the interior of the solid. Dr. Emmett's work on the BET Method earned him a Nobel Prize nomination. 1, record 20, English, - Brunauer%26ndash%3BEmmett%26ndash%3BTeller%20method

Temporal Paul wavelet analysis for instantaneous phase extraction using shadow moiré technique is proposed. Unlike the Morlet wavelet, the Paul wavelet has less restriction on the adjustment of wavelet parameters and can provide an optimal time and frequency resolution for a particular application by selecting the proper parameters. The Paul wavelet is a complex wavelet and is suitable for processing the temporal intensity data obtained from the shadow moiré technique for the phase retrieval. The proposed method can extract the phase information related to the state of the dynamic object at every instant in temporal domain. The phase information is associated to the displacement, three-dimensional(3D) surface-profile and the instantaneous state of the dynamic object. In addition, the instantaneous frequency of vibrating object can be obtained using the scale of the wavelet ridge by direct integration without temporal and spatial phase unwrapping. Thus the phase unwrapping error can be avoided. An experiment is conducted on the central loaded beam to demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique. 3, record 29, English, - shadow%20moir%C3%A9%20technique

The term “moiré” is ... a French word referring to “an irregular wavy finish usually produced on a fabric by pressing between engraved rollers” (Webster’s 1981). In optics it refers to a beat pattern produced between two gratings of approximately equal spacing. It can be seen in everyday things such as the overlapping of two window screens, the rescreening of a half-tone picture, or with a striped shirt seen on television. The use of moiré for reduced sensitivity testing was introduced by Lord Rayleigh in 1874. Lord Rayleigh looked at the moiré between two identical gratings to determine their quality even though each individual grating could not be resolved under a microscope. ... Since Lord Rayleigh first noticed the phenomena of moiré fringes, moiré techniques have been used for a number of testing applications. Righi (1887) first noticed that the relative displacement of two gratings could be determined by observing the movement of the moiré fringes. The next significant advance in the use of moiré was presented by Weller and Shepherd (1948). They used moiré to measure the deformation of an object under applied stress by looking at the differences in a grating pattern before and after the applied stress. They were the first to use shadow moiré, where a grating is placed in front of a nonflat surface to determine the shape of the object behind it by using the shape of the moiré fringes. 4, record 29, English, - shadow%20moir%C3%A9%20technique

4, record 31, French, - pince%20%C3%A0%20os

Hockey took its most important step forward in 1924 when the International Hockey Federation, the world governing body for the sport, was founded in Paris under the initiative of Frenchman, Paul Léautey. Mr. Léautey, who would become the first President of the FIH, was motivated to action following hockey's omission from the program of the 1924 Paris Games. Mr. Léautey called together representatives from seven national federations to form the sport's international governing body, the Fédération Internationale de Hockey sur Gazon... The women's game developed quickly in many countries and in 1927, the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations(IFWHA) was formed.... After celebrating their respective Golden Jubilees-the FIH in 1974 and the IFWHA in 1980-the two organisations came together in 1982 to form the FIH. 3, record 42, English, - International%20Hockey%20Federation

This award was created in 1988 in honour of the former Honorary Campaign Chair of Ontario March of Dimes, the late Paul Martin Sr., who personally waged a battle against polio. As Canadian Minister of National Health and Welfare in the 1950s, Paul Martin Sr. took the courageous step of delivering the country's universal vaccination program despite an atmosphere of great uncertainty. The vaccine eventually ended the threat of polio in Canada. The award is presented annually to an individual(s) for service to Ontario March of Dimes in the areas of fundraising, service or policy. 1, record 46, English, - The%20Right%20Honourable%20Paul%20Martin%20Sr%2E%20Award

English, French, Spanish, Polish. Human Life International(HLI) was founded in 1981 by Benedictine monk, Fr. Paul Marx. A Catholic priest and Doctor of Sociology. Fr. Marx was a pro-life pioneer in the 1960s and 1970s, teaching scientifically proven natural methods of birth spacing, commonly referred to as Natural Family Planning(NFP). Fr. Marx became alarmed at the increased reliance on abortion, especially among the young, and the proliferation of groups promoting abortion rights. He founded the Human Life Center at Minnesota's St. John's University in 1972. This became Human Life International in 1981. Through HLI Fr. Marx worked to promote NFP and to defend innocent unborn human life. HLI has grown over the years into a worldwide human rights organization, whose global mission is to protect and defend the right to life at all stages of human development and to promote natural methods of birth spacing. 3, record 85, English, - Human%20Life%20International

Music in which a composer pulls his melodies and rhythmic structure from an amalgam of different styles from around the world. A single world-beat song could contain such disparate forms as salsa, reggae, Mexican themes, 12-tone sections and Old World symphonic forms. Pop composers Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel and more highbrow composers like Philip Glass are good examples of worldbeaters.(US News and World Report, January 1st, 1991, p. 85). 1, record 91, English, - world%2Dbeat

In one of his more recent studies, Professor Radom has developed a new strategy for designing neutral saturated hydrocarbons that may contain a planar, tetracoordinate carbon atom, leading to the alkaplane family of molecules. This research has revealed remarkable properties for such molecules including ionization energies comparable to those of the alkali metals lithium and sodium, and proton affinities greater than that of ’proton sponge", with important implications for synthetic chemistry. 1, record 92, English, - proton%20sponge
