A shortchange artist prefers to operate on careless or inexperienced cashiers. His goal is to confuse the cashier during a money transaction by changing his mind in the middle of a purchase. One common method used by a shortchange artist is to make a $. 50 purchase and pay with a $20 bill, then suddenly changes his mind and decides to pay with a $1. 00 bill. He will hand back the change from the $20 bill after pocketing $10 and produce the $1. 00 bill to buy the item. An experienced cashier won’t realize ten dollars is missing from the $20 change. During the exchange of money, the shortchange artist usually tries to take the cashier's mind from her work by talking about his job, family, sad story, etc. hoping the cashier won’t notice the missing $10 bill. 6, record 5, English, - shortchange%20artist

... the term "state of technology"(a standard term used in licences) is a dynamic concept and both the availability and the economic feasibility of the technology become issues. Dr. Rainer HAMM(Rechtsanwalt)(defence attorney) commented that there is a sensitive major tax on waste water. Those who have a licence to use a river to pollute have to pay a fee depending on the degree of pollution. The waste water effluent fees are quite effective to minimize pollution.... Large corporations also have high incentive to develop technology. It is they who develop technology. While universities can and do develop standards, they cannot build technology and compare standards. That can only be done by industry itself. Thus it is the industry which makes the law by defining the standards of technology. They are motivated to do so by the new device, popular in the United States, known as "technology forcing. "Dr. HAMM was however sceptical of using criminal law to pursue dynamic concepts. If you include a state of technology that can change any time and then punish someone for not having fulfilled the state of technology, then you blur the distinction between what is criminal and what is not criminal. 2, record 7, English, - technology%20forcing

Express toll lanes are special lanes added to highways that allow motorists to pay their way out of traffic jams. Motorists in an express toll lane pay a fee that is automatically deducted through an electronic reader as their car or truck moves along at highway speeds, similar to the way E-ZPass works. The price would change with the degree of congestion, so that a premium is charged when the rest of the roadway is especially crowded but the toll drops as the highway empties. 2, record 13, English, - express%20toll%20lane

When conducting studies and experiments, researchers pay attention to constants and variables to draw conclusions. Constants are the factors that do not change throughout the experiment, and variables are the factors that vary or have the potential to vary. While there are many different kinds of variables, the two most commonly discussed are the dependent and independent variables. … The dependent variable is the factor that receives the stimulus. Researchers measure dependent variables to explore the potential effects of the stimulus, because the aptly named dependent variable is dependent upon the stimulus to be changed. For example, in a study on the relationship between the length of a bicycle ride and the riders’ heart rate, the dependent variable is the heart rate, which the length of the bicycle ride may affect. … The independent variable is the factor altered or varied to give various amounts of the stimulus. 3, record 15, English, - dependent%20variable

2, record 15, French, - variable%20d%C3%A9pendante

As the system unfolds, it will be important for Large Final Emitters and other companies or individuals to maximize their potential gain.... Executive suites are very common in most U. S. cities and may include an inexpensive marketing package to help you develop a local corporate image. These suites offer economic overhead through pooled secretarial support, office space, photocopying, mail handling and telephone answering services. Telephones are answered with your firm's name and you pay a monthly rental and phone answering fee plus additional charges for specific services used or furniture rented. Costs of these services vary by region and by size of space. You are usually free to move within the building as your space needs change. You will probably find it more economical to open your own office once you have more than five staff on site. 1, record 28, English, - executive%20suite
