In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered. 2, record 2, English, - after%20capstan

The adverse consequences of romantic rejection are illustrated by Novak v. Waterfront Comm’n [Commission] of N. Y. [New York] Harbor. The plaintiff, Shanti Novak, was a detective with the Waterfront Commission of N. Y. Harbor. She became romantically involved with Scott Politano at a time when both held the same rank, in different locations. Eventually the two became live-in partners, and during this time, Politano was promoted to Lieutenant and was transferred to Novak's office, consequently becoming her supervisor. Novak terminated her relationship with Politano shortly thereafter. After her breakup with Politano, Novak was singled out for unfavorable treatment even after Politano was replaced as Novak's supervisor. Novak was given unfavorable work and shift assignments; was subjected to heightened scrutiny with respect to her work and her requests for overtime pay and sick leave; was the only detective not to receive further formal detective training; was excluded from an email regarding a shooting range schedule; and was the only detective to whom newly hired detectives were not assigned, which was both humiliating and deprived her of the opportunity to learn from the new assignees, who were seasoned detectives from other agencies. The situation became worse after she complained to the human resources department. 2, record 5, English, - live%2Din%20partner

Putting a price on pollution is the most efficient and affordable way of reducing our emissions. In provinces where the federal fuel charge applies, eight out of ten households get more money back than they pay through their quarterly pollution price rebate. The expert, Dr. Smith, identified a third meaning of "odds, "the "one-sided" odds given by the lottery corporations as compared to the "true" odds. From table 4 of his report, it is apparent that the lottery corporations provide odds that are significantly different from the true odds in order to limit the amounts they have to pay out. The discrepancy becomes even more startling the more games that are played. If one plays 10 games the payout is 200 to one. The true odds are 1024 to one. What this illustrates is that people like the appellants are playing with an opponent, the OLGC [Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation], who holds cards in a deck that is already stacked against the player. 1, record 10, English, - one%2Dsided%20odds

The first step in the development method is to lay out the most economically feasible subdivision plan and estimate the gross income from the sale of the lots, as if the tract were fully subdivided and sold. From the anticipated gross revenues, the next step is to deduct the total cost of development : the cost of installing streets and utilities, the expense of marketing the lots, interest charges on money borrowed, the cost of administration; professional fees, taxes, overhead, and the developer's profit for undertaking the venture. The balance is presumed to be the value of the raw land-the price which a developer would likely pay for the tract "as is", to be used for subdivision purposes. 1, record 19, English, - development%20method

Working time accounts offer employers an additional staff management tool, and can also serve as substitutes for partial and early retirement schemes. From the employees’ standpoint, working time accounts offer attractive advantages for life and retirement planning, can help motivate staff and keep qualified staff loyal to the company. The principle behind working time accounts couldn’t be simpler : employees pay time units and/or pay components into their accounts, out of current salary, bonuses, unused holiday allowances or overtime, for example. Assets are invested gross, that is, before deducting taxes and social security contributions. Employer and employee can agree to use the assets saved up to release the employee from work for a long period of time(long-term working time account) or for early retirement(lifetime working time account). 1, record 34, English, - working%20time%20account

Express toll lanes are special lanes added to highways that allow motorists to pay their way out of traffic jams. Motorists in an express toll lane pay a fee that is automatically deducted through an electronic reader as their car or truck moves along at highway speeds, similar to the way E-ZPass works. The price would change with the degree of congestion, so that a premium is charged when the rest of the roadway is especially crowded but the toll drops as the highway empties. 2, record 35, English, - express%20toll%20lane

Making calls to your friends and family through your normal telephone is becoming obsolete. It is now the norm for people to talk to their friends and family with instant messaging services such as Yahoo, AOL, and MSN. Another version of using your computer to communicate is using VoIP(Voice over Internet Protocol) [, i. e. ] a class of hardware and software that allows people to use the Internet for making telephone calls. One of the many advantages of this type of service is no surcharge. The amount you pay for this service is included in your monthly Internet fees. AOL is coming out with a new "Total Talk VoIP" that is to replace AOL Internet Phone. The difference being that with AOL Internet Phone it was available exclusively for those who were members of AOL. A sole licence is one in which the patentee does not himself abstain from manufacture. Such licences are not therefore very common since the patentee will usually either wish to maintain his monopoly and satisfy the market by his own manufacture or get out and leave it to his licensee. On the other hand a licensee is often not interested in paying an entrance fee to be one of a crowd, so to speak, but is prepared to pay for the privilege of running in double harness with the patentee and from the patentee's point of view discretion may be the better part of valour if he is confronted by a powerful and reluctant competitor who is prepared to settle on this basis.
