CONT

Phobia treatment is typically done by what is known as "exposure therapy. "This treatment involves exposing the patient to the anxiety invoking stimulus, and allowing the anxiety to subside. Virtual reality exposure therapy exposes the patient to a virtual environment that contains the fear-inducing stimulus rather than exposing them to the stimulus in the real world or having the patient imagine the stimulus.

The essential feature of this disorder is an excessive shrinking from contact with unfamiliar people that is of sufficient severity to interfere with social functioning in peer relationships and that is of at least six months’ duration. This is coupled with a clear desire for social involvement with familiar people, such as peers the person knows well and family members.

OBS

The DSM-III-R [Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, Third edition-Revised] diagnosis of avoidant disorder of childhood or adolescence has been deleted and subsumed with social phobia in DSM-IV [Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, Fourth edition].

Ce diagnostic présent dans la troisième version révisée du Manuel diagnostique et statistique des troubles mentaux a été supprimé et intégré au diagnostic de phobie sociale dans la quatrième édition du Manuel diagnostique et statistique des troubles mentaux.

Beta blockers, such as propanolol, are not useful for people with general social phobia who are anxious in most social situations; instead, propanolol may be useful for people who are anxious about specific performance situations, such as presenting a speech before an audience... Propranolol falls into the broad pharmacologic category known as beta blockers. Beta blockers block specific sites in the central nervous system known as beta-adrenergic receptor sites. When these sites are blocked, heart rate and blood pressure are reduced and patients become less anxious. Because of this, propranolol is useful in treating chest pain, high blood pressure, and excessive nervousness. Unfortunately, propranolol often makes breathing disorders, such as asthma, worse because it tends to constrict breathing passages and sometimes causes fluid to build up in the lungs if it excessively depresses the heart.

Ehlers et al.(1988) proposed a model that explains panic attacks as a result of selective focusing on panicogenic interoception. According to this model, PD [panic disorder] patients pay excessive attention to their somatic sensations. They are thus more likely to notice, perceive and react to common interoceptive stimuli. Such sensations then trigger a panic attack. In a recent article, Ehlers(1993) suggests a modification to this theory of interoceptive phobia, arguing that, rather than allocating too much attentional resources to interoceptive stimuli, PD patients are more accurate and capable of detecting actual somatic changes than their healthy counterparts.

CONT

Ecophobia -- a fear of ecological problems and the natural world -- is a fear of oil spills, rainforest destruction, whale hunting, acid rain, the ozone hole, and Lyme disease [and sometimes the fear of just being outside].

CONT

This summer’s record-busting hot spell ... has aroused an extraordinary response. ... Many Americans have found themselves concerned ... about the whole bruised and abused human habitat. Soggy, unremitting heat sometimes seemed a symptom of general ecological collapse. ... Ecophobia, as the mood might be called, has not been induced by the hot spell alone .... The combination of heat and pollution gave a "sense of foreboding" ... [and provoked] apprehensions about ecological dangers .... Ecophobia ... is not likely to disappear ... [because] there is sufficient cause for fear about almost every aspect of the human environment.

OBS

Briefly, "ecophobia" is an irrational (often hysterical) and groundless hatred of the natural world, or aspects of it. Such fear of the agency of Nature plays out in many spheres. The personal hygiene industry relies on it, since capital-driven notions about personal cleanliness assign us preference for perfumes (for some more than others) over natural bodily odors; the cosmetic industry (in its passion for covering up Nature’s "flaws" and "blemishes") uses it; beauticians and barbers (in their military passion for cutting back natural growths) are sustained by it; city sanitation boards display it in their demands that residents keep grass short to prevent the introduction of "vermin" and "pests" into urban areas; landscaped gardens, trimmed poodles in women’s handbags on the Seoul subway system -- anything that amputates or seeks to amputate the agency of Nature and to assert a human order on a system that follows different orders is, in essence, ecophobic. Ecophobia is a subtle thing that takes many forms.

OBS

environmental phobia : This term seems to have a more restricted sense, that of the fear of environmental poisons, or is often used in the expression "situational-environmental phobia".

OBS
