Like systematic desensitization therapy, VRT can provide stimuli for patients who have difficulty in imagining scenes and/or are too phobic to experience real situations. Unlike in vivo systematic desensitization, VRT can be performed within the privacy of a room, thus avoiding public embarrassment and violation of patient confidentiality.

La perturbation occasionnée par ces symptômes au cours des sept derniers jours est indiquée sur une échelle allant de 0 (pas de perturbation) à 4 (perturbation importante). Pour chaque trouble psychiatrique, un score peut être calculé en divisant la somme des scores des symptômes par le nombre de symptômes présents. On peut déterminer également un facteur de gravité globale en divisant la somme des scores pour les 53 symptômes par le nombre de symptômes pour lesquels la personne a ressenti une perturbation (>0) au cours des sept derniers jours.
