CONT

The calculated ozone reduction is extremely sensitive to any tropospheric sink for the chlorofluoromethanes. For example, only about 1% of the CFMs [chlorofluoromethanes] in the atmosphere is dissociated each year, so that if there were an inactive sink that removes 2% of the CFMs each year without destroying ozone, then the ozone reduction would be only one-third of the estimate without such a sink.

CONT

Another criterion for establishing boundaries on physical grounds involves a consideration of areas of material accumulation, or sinks.... in projects involving the release of toxic materials, it is extremely important not only to understand the transport mechanisms involved but to have the site of accumulation included within the assessment boundary, although it may be some distance removed from the geographical focus of the project.

DEF

The external or limiting lines of any object or space; as, to set bounds on a property. (Definitions of Surveying or Associated Terms, 1981, p. 22).

CONT

"Boundary lines" or "bounds" are defined as the legal and imaginary lines by which different parcels of land are divided. (Skelton, 1930, p. 179).

CONT

The term "boundary" has no special meaning in law, but is commonly used to denote the imaginary line which is the ascertainable limit of one person's freehold or leasehold property. A boundary may also be the physical feature by which that limit is marked, e. g., a hedge, a wall, a bank or a stream.(Powell-Smith, p. 1)

SPI, or Sediment Profile Imagery, is an innovative and cost efficient method of surveying and/or monitoring lake or marine aquatic environments with a view to establishing the environmental status of these habitats or as part of a site suitability study.... SPI is based on single lens reflex(SLR) camera photography and computer-based image analysis which greatly accelerates the time required to write reports and provide relevant data to the client/legislator in a matter of weeks. SPI technology can readily quantify over 20 physical, chemical and biological parameters including : sediment grain size; prism penetration; surface pelletal layer; sediment surface relief; mud clasts; redox area; redox contrast; current apparent redox boundary; relict redox boundaries; methane gas vesicles; apparent faunal dominants; voids; burrows; surface features(e. g. worm tubes, epifauna, shell) ;dredged material; microbial aggregations; and successional stage.

Infiltration is the physical process involving movement of water through the boundary area where the atmosphere interfaces with the soil. The surface phenomenon is governed by soil surface conditions. Water transfer is related to the porosity of the soil and the permeability of the soil profile.

CONT

The availability of water is often the most important factor limiting crop production. As water moves from the roots to the leaves in its journey along the soil/plant/atmosphere continuum, plants have several means of regulating its flow. The goal of this project is to reassess specific aspects of control of water movement through plants.

CONT

Continuum sol-plante-atmosphère. [...]

The SHAW model is ... capable of simulating complex wintertime phenomena of freezing effects on moisture and solute migration, solute effects on frost formation, and frozen soil related runoff. DEF
