Pilotis.

Record 6 2005-05-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Carpets and Floor Coverings
DEF

A tufted carpet style, combining characteristics of both shag and plush textures.

CONT

[The splush] is halfway between the shag and the plush. The pile height is usually about three quarters of an inch, with a density which is insufficient to cause the yarn ends to stand upright to foot traffic. Although the density is greater than that of a shag, the same "random-lay" effect is still apparent.

OBS

Most splushes were made from non-heat-set singles yarns(similar to yarns used in plush) but were constructed with long pile length on wide gauge machines at relatively low stitch rates(similar to shag construction)

French

Domaine(s)
  • Tapis et revêtements de sol
DEF

OBS

Foot print free carpet also may be called “trackless”, “stuffer-box”, and mistakenly, “frieze”. These names describe the tendency of this construction to show fewer footprints and sweeper marks than other cut pile constructions. It should be noted that no cut pile can be classified as being completely free of shading. These constructions are obtained by stuffing yarn into a steam box(stuffer box) and providing a kinked or curled yarn. The fiber is exposed to live steam to set yarn memory in this curled position. This curling of the fiber reduces light reflectance, thus reducing the appearance of footprints. Generally, when viewing a texture from the top, kinked yarns may provide a two-tone effect as a result of shade variations from reflected light.

CONT

Fabric Forms for Pile Jacketing.... All piles in a marine environment suffer deterioration at varying rates.... General Methods of Repair. The methods used for rehabilitation of piles are varied and constantly increasing in number.... In the 1960s a technique was developed that utilizes construction fabrics as a concrete-forming system. Basically this concept uses as a concrete from a jacket of woven nylon fabric, each end of which is connected by a heavy industrial zipper sewn onto the fabric. The ends of the fabric above and below the deterioriated pile zone are banded to the pile. These fabric forms have proven economic advantages over other concrete forming systems because of their light weight, ease of intallation, relatively low fabric cost, and ease of connection onto the piles at any location above the mudline.

  • Deep Foundations
CONT

Caissons... are load-bearing enclosures sunk into the ground, usually to protect excavation for a foundation, aid construction of the substructure, and serve as part of the permanent structure.... In foundations, caissons are used to facilitate construction of shafts or piers extending from near the surface of land or water to a bearing stratum. This type of construction can carry heavy loads to great depths.... They range in size from abut that of a pile to over 100 ft in length and width. Some small ones are considered caisson piles.... For some of the smaller caissons used for foundation shafts, the casing generally is not assigned any load-carrying capacity, or it may be withdrawn as concrete fills the hole.
