Sanitary and storm sewer systems are an integral part of an urban area. Waste treatment facilities are carefully designed for industrial, institutional, commercial, and population wastes. To ensure proper flow of waste and storm systems, pre-benched manhole bases allow smooth transition and flows at junctions, change of pipe sizes and lateral connections. The pre-benched manhole base consists of a section of monolithically poured manhole barrel with channeled concrete between the inverts of inlet/outlet pipes with a minimum slope of 25mm or 1". The channeled concrete is smooth finished and in most cases a gasketed opening is provided for the insertion of inlet/outlet pipes. The manhole base has a joint on the top to allow for riser sections to be placed to reach the installation invert. The pre-cast, pre-benched manhole base allows for a high quality and quick alternative to cast in place benching. Using pre-cast, pre-benched manhole bases minimize construction time in the field and ensures a quality, long term solution in building storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure. Most pre-benched manhole bases are custom built for the contractor where the angles between the inlet/outlet mains require specific layout. In some cases straight through, 45 or 90 degree configurations are available for standard pipe sizes of 100-200 mm. 2, record 10, English, - pre%2Dbenched%20manhole

Electronically-controlled pneumatic(ECP) brakes — This braking system is an alternative to conventional air brakes. The system sends electrical signals to the cars, instantaneously applying the brakes(quick response braking) ;it does not rely on the flow of air from the locomotive to each car to activate the brakes. Information is also exchanged between the locomotives and each car. When the system senses that the brake pipe pressure has dropped below 50 psi, a “low brake pressure condition” message is initiated. This message results in all of the ECP-equipped cars and the ECP-equipped locomotives automatically applying their brakes in emergency. 2, record 12, English, - electronically%2Dcontrolled%20pneumatic%20braking%20system

1, record 12, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20freinage%20pneumatique%20%C3%A0%20commande%20%C3%A9lectronique

The reasons why water hammer, which can be so troublesome if water is present in a steam line or if steam is present in a hot water line, is apparently absent from pipes transmitting very wet mixtures is rather obscure : it may have something to do with the annular flow of the water, clinging to the pipe walls, rather than with "rivulet" flow when smaller quantities of water are present in a steam line. 1, record 26, English, - annular%20flow

The mineral clogging mechanism. Due to the drag force of the water at the interface between the soil and a drain pipe, soil particles may be carried into the pipe via its slots. This process can never be prevented completely, but can be counter-acted by installing an envelope material, often a geotextile, around the drain. Generally, two types of mineral clogging can be detected which are referred to as primary and secondary mineral clogging. Primary clogging is a consequence of the sudden drastic changes in the soil/water boundary conditions, caused by the installation of the subsurface drainage system, and the resulting water flow, including particle transport due to the high hydraulic gradients, towards the newly installed pipes. Secondary clogging is defined as particle transport into filters and/or pipes, in the long term;... 1, record 27, English, - primary%20mineral%20clogging

Each plug is loaded with an inert porous material which serves as a structural support matrix for the microorganisms. The seed cultures in the bioplugs are a mixture of microorganisms selected for their abilities to biodegrade the contaminants of concern... The bioplugs are strategically inserted into the contaminated zone(s). Liquids then flow through the plugs by a pressure gradient created using compressed air. This flow acts to accelerate the movement of ground or irrigation water through the immobilized bed; thereby, facilitating the mineralization of organics within the aqueous phase and the bulk generation of biomass which bleeds off the bed. 1, record 29, English, - bioplug

... dry pipe sprinkler systems have more corrosion, rust, and scale build up in the sprinkler piping system than in wet pipe systems. Constant Volume Sampler(CVS). Motor vehicle exhaust is a complex mixture of unburned fuel, combustion products(including a high water vapor content), and intake air that exits the tail pipe at high temperatures. In simulated driving conditions on the dynamometer, the volume of the exhaust emitted from the tail pipe is continually changing depending on where in the driving cycle the vehicle is(for example, during acceleration, during deceleration, at constant speed, or at idle). To quantitatively determine emission rates from vehicles, we use a constant volume sampling system, which maintains a constant total flow rate of vehicle exhaust plus dilution air. With a CVS system, as exhaust flow increases, such as during heavy acceleration, the dilution air is automatically decreased and the sampling source is representative of exhaust variations. This CVS system provides the source for all exhaust samples collected(regulated and unregulated). Because some compounds present in the exhaust are soluble in water, quantitative transfer requires that the diluted exhaust be maintained above its dew point by providing sufficient dilution air through the CVS. In addition, sampling components, such as the raw exhaust transfer duct and sample lines, must be heated to prevent water condensation. 2, record 43, English, - constant%20volume%20sampling

Drip Irrigation - A watering technique that reduces water use by 20 - 50%, utilizing a series of hoses and small emitters or porous tubing to deliver small amounts of water to individual plants. 4, record 52, English, - porous%20tube

Subsurface drip irrigation is a variation of traditional drip irrigation where the tubing and emitters are buried beneath the soil surface, rather than laid on the ground or suspended from wires. The products being used today in subsurface drip irrigation come in three basic configurations : hard hose, drip tape, and porous tubing.... Porous pipe products emit water all along the length of the tubing. There are literally thousands of places per meter where water weeps out of the tubing. This design has shown resistance to plugging by roots. The disadvantage is its flow path is by far the smallest of the three configurations. This increases the likelihood of plugging by fine particles. It typically has the largest coefficient of manufacturing variability of the three configurations, which can be a major detriment because it prevents high distribution uniformities and high efficiencies. 5, record 52, English, - porous%20tube

Rapid Mixing and Flocculation. In the rapid-mixing, intense mixing or agitation is required to disperse the chemicals uniformly. In the flocculation, the fine microfloc begins to agglomerate into larger floc particles. The types of devices usually used to furnish the agitation required in both rapid mixing and flocculation may be generally classified as: (1) mechanical agitators, such as paddles; (2) pneumatic agitators; and (3) baffle basins. Water pipe flushing is performed on distribution systems to remove any accumulated sediments or other impurities which have been deposited in the pipe. Water pipe flushing also improves the flow of water through the distribution system, allowing it to work at capacity. Flushing is performed by isolating sections of the distribution system and opening flushing valves or more commonly fire hydrants to cause a large volume of flow to pass through the isolated pipeline and suspend the settled sediment. 3, record 61, English, - water%20pipe%20flushing

Highspeed, Highpressure Sewer and Pipe Cleaning. The vehicle is positioned at the manhole with hose reel above opening. A special high-pressure hose, fitted with a hardened steel jet nozzle, is introduced into the sewer. Water pressure up to 2000 lbs. psi drives the hose up the sewer against the flow. A center hole in the nozzle breaks up accumulation in front of the hose to allow for easy passage. When the hose is withdrawn, the water jets flush the sewer clean. Light materials are flushed down the line and heavy materials are deposited in the manhole for easy removal with the sanitary Hydro-Vac. A final jetting of the interior of the manhole with the high-pressure gun completes the cleaning operation. 3, record 65, English, - sewer%20cleaning

Rockshield Testing. Description. Tuff-N-Nuff is a non-woven mat consisting of small diameter (approximately 0.050") strands of PVC. The strands are bonded to each other in a controlled random pattern. The rock shield protects pipe coatings from direct impact during backfilling operations. It also provides long term protection by keeping hard objects in the backfill away from the pipe coating during operation of the line. Pipe may move laterally as well as longitudinally, and the rock shield is the first line of defense against damage to the coating and the pipe. 5, record 66, English, - rock%20shield

The inlet end is a couple of inches higher than the outlet to allow condensate to drain out the low end. A few tubes have been removed at the top to give the vapor more room to distribute itself along the length of the shell. There is a vent on the shell side near the outlet end to allow non-condensable gases to leave. ... flow rate measurement is essential in controlling all phases of processing... One of the most widely used methods is the turbine flowmeter. A turbine rotor is allowed to rotate freely in the moving fluid, and its rotation causes a sudden distortion in the field of a small, powerful magnet located in a sensor unit outside the pipe. This distortion generates an alternating-current voltage that is transmitted to a small computer. The computer analyses this information and calculates and displays the flow rate. 1, record 77, English, - turbine%20flowmeter

Automotive engineers could imagine, for instance, constructing an electrorheological clutch. The fluid inside this clutch would couple a car's engine to its drive shaft, which delivers power to the wheels. When solidified, the fluid would force the drive shaft to rotate. As it liquifies, the fluid would allow the engine to disengage from the drive shaft and spin freely, as if in neutral gear. Such a clutch would have few parts to wear or fail. And with a response time of a few milliseconds, it would make purely mechanical clutches look slow. It was also hoped that electrorheological fluids would lead to valveless hydraulic systems, in which solidifying fluid would shut off flow through a thin section of pipe. 1, record 78, English, - electrorheological%20clutch

1, record 78, French, - embrayage%20%C3%A9lectrorh%C3%A9ologique

Profile extrusion is similar to pipe extrusion except that the sizing mandrel is obviously not necessary. A die plate, in which an orifice of appropriate geometry has been cut, is placed on the face of the normal die assembly. The molten polymer is subjected to surface drag as it passes through the die, resulting in reduced flow through the thinner sections of the orifice. This effect is countered by altering the shape of the orifice, but often this results in a wide difference in the orifice shape from the desired extrusion profile. 2, record 79, English, - profile%20extrusion

Generally, two types of mineral clogging can be detected which are referred to as primary and secondary clogging. Primary clogging is a consequence of the sudden drastic changes in the soil/water boundary conditions, caused by the installation of the subsurface drainage system, and the resulting water flow, including particle transport due to the high hydraulic gradients, towards the newly installed pipe. Secondary clogging is defined as a particle transport into filters and/or pipes, in the long term;... 1, record 88, English, - mineral%20clogging

Method of cones. This is a relatively simple method of measuring the mass flow, quality and enthalpy characteristics of a wet bore by using a cyclone separator and a series of measuring cones... The method avoids the separate measurement of the water(though a lip pressure discharge pipe could provide useful corroborative evidence) and enables the dryness and enthalpy of the bore mixture to be deduced indirectly. It also dispenses with the need for long straight pipes required when a sharp-edged orifice is used for the steam measurement. 1, record 95, English, - method%20of%20cones

Critical lip pressure method... If hot water or a water/steam mixture is discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe, and if the pressure is measured at the discharge lip of the pipe, this pressure is a measure of the heat flow of the discharged fluid. Where the two phases of a water/steam mixture are segregated by means of a cyclone separator the water can be measured either by a cooled orifice or, after allowing for the flashed steam, by means of a V-notch or weir. Alternatively, however, the water may simply be discharged at sonic velocity through an open-ended pipe and measured by applying... [James] formula. 1, record 97, English, - rivulet%20flow
