A rigid or articulated ramp attached to a pipe-laying barge, which serves as a catenary support for the welded pipe as it is lowered onto the sea bed.

The rigid stinger is in two curved, hinged parts, but the articulated type is made up of four or five sections, perhaps 100 metres long overall. Buoyancy controls can regulate the depth of the stinger to optimize the bending forces on the completed pipe on its way to the sea floor. A stinger may have to support some 300 to 400 metres of pipe.

... some substances are not being released into the environment in an easily defined way like from a pipe. Instead, they may be released into the environment because they end up in a landfill, and ultimately break down, and then enter a wastewater stream. The words "medium indicative of release to the environment" apply to something like that wastewater stream. Take for example a substance that is present in a consumer product and is released when the product is used or as the product degrades.... As the product containing the substance is used, traces of the substance may end up in municipal wastewater effluent. The presence of the substance in wastewater effluent is then indicative of its release into the environment.

One automatic bell drinker will serve up to one hundred birds. The bell drinker is designed in such a way that the birds cannot sit on it and it is suspended from the roof by a chain. The water pipe comes down parallel to the chain and inserts into the bell which contains a ball valve. This method will provide a constant fresh flow of water.

Another soil process, which is of importance to subsea pipeline engineering, is dynamic liquefaction caused either due to the passing of individual(steep) waves or due to a gradual build-up of pore pressure in the soil due to repeated cyclical forcing, such as wave motion. As a consequence of liquefaction the soil loses its bearing capacity. Hence, a negatively buoyant pipe will sink into the seabed, but what is usually worse is that a buoyant pipe can work its way out of the seabed with potentially hazardous consequences. Although dynamic liquefaction has been studied for more than 20 years, we are still some ways from formulating clear design rules, partially because it is still not clear how important this effect is in the field; the evidence is contradictory.

Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The surge-block is slowly lowered each time resistance begins to decrease.

The drilling method by which a hole is drilled by a rotating bit to which a downward force is applied.

During the last 40 years, rotary drilling has become the preferred method for penetrating underground formations... a special tool-the drill bit-rotates while bearing down on the bottom of the well, thus gouging and chipping its way downward... The drill bit is connected to the surface equipment through a drill pipe, a heavy-walled tubing through which the drilling mud is fed to the bottom of the bore hole. In most cases, the drill pipe also transmits the rotation motion from a turntable at the surface to the bit at the bottom of the hole.

"... Pipe bursting involves digging an entry pit at one end of the failed pipe and running a pneumatic pipe-bursting tool and an expander into the pipe through the pit opening. The pipe-bursting tool is a soil displacement hammer fitted with cutting blades. A steel line, attached to the head of the tool and to a winch on the other end of the pipe, keeps the line tight and helps guide the tool. As the pipe burster hammers through old pipe, the expander moves broken fragments and dirt out of the way to make room for new pipe, which is attached to the back of the tool and follows it into the void. After the new pipe is in place, crews connect service laterals at specified locations.

Les nouvelles méthodes consistaient: a) en l'utilisation d'une technique d'éclatement pour retirer l'ancienne conduite et la remplacer simultanément avec une nouvelle et b) en la fabrication in situ d'un nouveau revêtement en insérant une gaine imprégnée de résine dans la conduite existante afin de former une nouvelle conduite structurellement indépendante [après séchage].

Parmi les techniques les plus utilisées : l'injection, qui consiste à aller placer sous pression des résines ou des gels sur les défauts ponctuels grâce à un appareillage guidé depuis la surface; le gainage ou chemisage continu, qui permet de reconstituer la paroi interne de la conduite, également à partir de résines; enfin le tubage qui permet d'introduire une conduite de diamètre inférieur dans le tronçon à réhabiliter ou dans une voie libérée après broyage ou éclatement de la conduite défectueuse.
