Chip designers pipeline the instructions, or low-level commands, given to the hardware. The first pipelined microprocessors used a five-stage pipeline.(The number of stages completed each second is given by the so-called clock rate. A personal computer with a 200 megahertz clock then executes 100 million stages per second.) Because the speedup from pipelining equals the number of stages, recent microprocessors have adopted eight or more stage pipelines. 2, record 6, English, - pipeline%20microprocessor

Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Pipelining is employed to obtain faster microprocessor configurations. With the addition of an n-bit register at the output of microprogram memory, the microprocessor can be operated in what is called the pipeline mode. Based on the status of the various addresses, instruction and control busses the master clock is halted at an arbitrary location in the program for both serial and pipeline configurations. 2, record 7, English, - pipeline
