Steel helmets, which had been standard-issue since World War I, were replaced in the 1980s by the first of a series of helmets fabricated of nylon. The rail was originally for scopes. However, once established, the use of the system was expanded to other accessories, such as tactical lights, laser aiming modules, night vision devices, reflex sights, foregrips, bipods and bayonets. Because they were originally designed and used for telescopic sights, the rails were first used only on the receivers of larger caliber rifles. But their use has extended to the point that Picatinny rails and accessories have replaced iron sights in the design of many firearms, and they are also incorporated into the undersides of semi-automatic pistol frames and even on grips.

Manual safety feature found on most exposed-hammer firearms, wherein the hammer is half retracted and blocked in that position by the sear so that it cannot be operated by a normal pull of the trigger or fire the cartridge if struck accidentally. It also acts as an automatic safety to intercept the hammer and prevent firing if the thumb slips off the hammer during manual cocking.
