In a flat engine that is not a boxer, pairs of pistons share a crankpin. In a true boxer engine, every piston has its own crankpin.... The result of the boxer motor's use of individual crankpins is that the pistons on either side move opposite one another, which helps to cancel out engine vibration. The back-and forth motion of the pistons resembles the punches of a boxer, which is where the engine gets its name. 2, record 2, English, - boxer%20engine

When a piston in an engine is pushed up into its cylinder, the upward movement traps the mixture of air and fuel above it and compresses it to one-eighth or one-ninth of its original volume. This puts the molecules closer together, so they hit the piston head far more often. Thus, the pressure goes up. 3, record 6, English, - piston%20crown

Unfeathering is accomplished by holding the feathering button in the OUT position for about 2s. This creates an artificial underspeed condition at the governor and causes high-pressure oil from the feathering pump to be directed to the rear of the propeller piston. As soon as the piston has moved outward a short distance, the blades will have sufficient angle to start rotation of the engine. When this occurs, the unfeathering switch can be released and the governor will assume control of the propeller. 2, record 7, English, - unfeathering

The rotary engine, or Wankel engine, is somewhat similar to the standard piston engine in that it is a spark ignition, internal-combustion engine. Its mechanical design, however, is quite different.... The heart of a rotary engine is a roughly triangular rotor that "walks" around a smaller, rigidly mounted gear. 4, record 10, English, - rotary%20engine
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The rotor is connected to the crankshaft through additional gears in such a manner that, for every rotation of the rotor, the crankshaft revolves three times. The tips of the triangular rotor move within the housing and are in constant contact with the housing walls. As the rotor moves, the volume between each side of the rotor and the housing walls continually changes. 4, record 10, English, - rotary%20engine

4, record 10, French, - moteur%20%C3%A0%20piston%20rotatif

In an indirect injection diesel engine, fuel is injected into a small prechamber which is connected to the cylinder by a narrow opening. The initial combustion takes place in this prechamber. This has the effect of slowing the rate of combustion, which tends to reduce audible noise. In a direct injection diesel engine, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The piston incorporates a depression(often toroidal) which is where initial combustion takes place. Direct injection diesel engines are generally more efficient than indirect injection engines, but have a tendency to produce greater amounts of audible noise. In either case the location where combustion takes place, called a swirl chamber, is carefully designed to ensure adequate mixing of the atomized fuel with the compression-heated air. 4, record 24, English, - direct%2Dinjection%20diesel%20engine

So what is the difference between a non-condensing and condensing engine? A "condensing" steam engine does not exhaust its piped steam. Instead the spent steam is piped into a devise whcih, like a car radiator, cools the steam turning it back in to liquid water (cooling and condensing the steam). That still very hot wtaer is pumped back into the boilers where it is reheated and reused. Since the returning water is still very hot it requires less heat to bring it back up to boiling temperature. A big savings in fuel and boiling water is free of mud and dirt like normal river water. 4, record 26, English, - condensing%20steam%20engine

In the hydraulic governors, the power which moves the engine throttle does not come from the speed measuring device [as in mechanical governors]. Instead, it comes from a hydraulic power piston, or servo-motor. This is a piston which is acted upon by a fluid under pressure, generally oil under the pressure of a pump. 1, record 43, English, - hydraulic%20governor

1, record 43, French, - r%C3%A9gulateur%20hydraulique

The unloader type of regulator is used on high-pressure sprayers. This valve bypasses excess liquid during operation and, when the boom or handgun is shut off, returns all liquid to the tank at a very low pressure. The unloader regulator is a definite asset on sprayers powered by an auxiliary engine and on sprayers equipped with a piston or plunger pump. 1, record 44, English, - unloader%20regulator

1, record 44, French, - r%C3%A9gulateur%20%C3%A0%20d%C3%A9tendeur
