Subject field(s)
  • Mechanical Components
  • Steam-Powered Machines and Condensers
CONT

Cut-off denotes the position of the piston at the moment the valve is closing the admission port. When the engine is working hard and slowly, long cut-off admits steam for most of the stroke of the piston.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Composants mécaniques
  • Machines à vapeur et condenseurs
CONT

Subject field(s)

CONT

The rudder actuator is a tandem actuator, having two internal piston areas for each hydraulic source(A & B). The actuator is capable of positioning the rudder panel with either one or both main hydraulic sources available, though with one source inoperative a reduced rudder panel deflection would result due to blowdown at higher airspeeds. Flow of hydraulic fluid to the rudder actuator is controlled by the dual servo-valve. This is a complex dual concentric cylinder with an outer and inner slide. During normal rudder pedal inputs sufficient rudder panel deflection is catered for by the primary(inner) valve alone. However, should a larger panel deflection be required or a higher rate rudder input be commanded, the secondary(outer) sleeve moves in addition to port extra fluid to the actuator. Movement of the outer sleeve is typically no more than 1 mm. Position of both sleeves of the servo valve is controlled by a complex mechanism of bell cranks, input rod and summing lever, the geometry of which is such as to provide movement of the sleeves in relation to the body of the valve.

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
OBS

Application of the brake pedal, which is linked to the master cylinder piston rod, causes the piston rod to push the piston forward inside the master cylinder casting. A slight forward movement blocks the compensating port, and the buildup of pressure begins. This pressure is transmitted to the brake assembly. When the brake pedal is released and returns to the "off" position, the piston return spring pushes the front piston seal and the piston back to full "off" position against the piston return stop. This again clears the compensating port. Fluid that was moved into the brake assembly and brake connecting line is then pushed back to the master cylinder by the brake piston which is returned to the "off" position by the pressure of the brake piston return springs. Any pressure or excess volume of fluid is relieved through the compensating port and passes back to the fluid reservoir. This prevents the master cylinder from locking or causing the brakes to drag.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
OBS

Direct injection(DI) refers to fuel injected directly into the combustion chamber above the piston. Direct injection has long been used on large diesel engines. Smaller diesels are increasingly adopting direct injection(vs. indirect injection into a pre-chamber). Direct injection also can be used in spark ignition(generally gasoline) engines instead of port fuel injection-for cleaner emissions, increased full throttle power and potentially for lean-burn operation.

CONT

Internally, the reservoir is equipped with a piston and diaphragm assembly which utilizes system pressure from the small pressure-line port to maintain a pressure head on the supply fluid.... As fluid enters the reservoir, the diaphragm is forced upward inside the reservoir shell, thus carrying the diaphragm guide and barrel upward.... as the diaphragm guide raises and lowers, the linkage will be moved, and this will provide the signal which is sent electrically to the fluid-quantity indicator in the cabin.
