The axis which runs from wing tip to wing tip through the centre of gravity.

CONT

The pitch axis is perpendicular to the aircraft centerline and lies in the plane of the wings. A pitch motion is an up or down movement of the nose of the aircraft... The pitching motion is being caused by the deflection of the elevator of this aircraft. The elevator is a hinged section at the rear of the horizontal stabilizer. There is usually an elevator on each side of the vertical stabilizer. The elevators work in pairs; when the right elevator goes up, the left elevator also goes up.

The aircraft can rotate around three axes: the fore-and-aft axis (or the roll axis); the span-wise (nose-up/nose-down) axis or the pitch axis; and the nose-left/nose-right, or yaw axis.

La gouverne de profondeur est un volet mobile situé sur l'arrière de l'empennage horizontal, qui lui-même est placé vers la queue de l'appareil. En modifiant l'angle de la gouverne de profondeur, le pilote modifie la force agissant sur l'empennage horizontal et, grâce à un bras de levier important, cette variation de force fait piquer ou cabrer l'avion autour de l'axe de tangage, axe horizontal passant par le centre de gravité de l'avion. Cette commande permet de régler l'incidence de l'avion.

During a turn the nose of the aircraft is continually pitching up. Your pitch gyro will see this and attempt to stop it. This results in the nose dropping, and a decrease in altitude. Your pressure sensor will sense this loss of altitude and attempt to correct it. So, effectively, the gyro and pressure sensor will be working against each other(slightly) and the end result is that your plane will not hold the desired altitude, but one slightly lower than the desired altitude. This is especially true in the early portions of the turn.

In the attitude indicator, the gyro wheel is mounted horizontally and spins about its vertical axis. It is mounted in a universal gimbal ring system, free about both the pitching and rolling axes of the airplane and is therefore able to remain spinning in a horizontal plane parallel to the true horizon, regardless of the rolling or pitching movements of the airplane around it.

Even when the designer has settled the size and angle of the tail plane, the force which it will experience will be outside the control of the pilot, and although they may automatically compensate for such things as changes in pitching moment on the main planes, they cannot possibly deal with changes of weight such as are caused by the dropping of bombs, consumption of fuel, and changes in the disposition of passengers and cargo. For this reason the adjustable tail plane was introduced, this being operated by an actuating gear and controlled by a wheel or lever in the pilot's cockpit. This enabled the pilot to alter the angle of setting of the tail plane during flight and so cause downward or upward forces upon it at will, thus balancing the aeroplane under all conditions.
