The Hénon attractor grows on the computer screen from a single point into a graceful boomerang shape. The image is produced by iterating a pair of simple functions, one of them having a nonlinear term, applied initially to some point in the plane specified by particular x-and y-coordinates. With each iteration, the attractor as a whole is stretched and folded, in much the same way that a baker kneads bread dough. Points that are initially close together get stretched apart, but are eventually folded back close together. All that's missing is the yeast. There is much that is strange about the Hémon attractor. For one thing, it appears to be the same regardless of the iteration's starting point. It also seems to retain complex detail at all levels : magnify any "line" and it is seen to separate into several parallel lines, each of which also separates under further magnification. 2, record 1, English, - H%C3%A9non%20attractor

Let us first examine the simplest attractor : a point. The "orbit" following the motion of a small ball put inside a funnel begins with wiggles that depend on its initial position and velocity, but converges eventually to the funnel' s tip; if the ball is bigger than the funnel aperture it comes to rest at the tip. The tip is a stable equilibrium point, or stable fixed point, for the ball.... The funnel' s tip is called an attractor point. 7, record 2, English, - attractor%20point

Any type of strange attractor in which trajectories diverge within a plane by spiralling out, then emerge from the plane and return again, reinjected into the center of the spiral. The process is repeated ad infinitum. This requires two operations : stretching due to sensitivity to initial conditions, followed by folding, without which the trajectories could not remain confined in a bounded space. 2, record 3, English, - aperiodic%20attractor

An attractor may be a single point, i. e. an asymptotically stable fixed point, or many points, i. e. a cycle or period. We shall show that some limits of orbits are aperiodic and so an attractor may be an infinity of points. 3, record 3, English, - aperiodic%20attractor

5, record 4, French, - cycle%20limite

The overall picture formed by all possible initial conditions in the(x, x) plane is referred to as the phase portrait. Consider the motion of a pendulum which comes to rest due to air resistance. In the abstract two-dimensional phase space(with coordinates x, and velocity, x) motions appear as noncrossing spirals converging asymptotically towards the resting, fixed state. This focus is called a point attractor which attracts all local transient motions. 2, record 5, English, - phase%20portrait

The Lorenz attractor. This magical image, resembling an owl' s mask or butterfly's wings, became en emblem for the early explorers of chaos. It revealed the fine structure hidden within a disorderly stream of data. Traditionally, the changing values of any one variable could be displayed in a so-called time series. To show the changing relationships among three variables required a different technique. At any instant in time, the three variables fix the location of a point in three-dimensional space; as the system changes, the motion of the point represents the continuously changing variables. Because the system never exactly repeats itself, the trajectory never intersects itself. Instead it loops around and around forever. 2, record 6, English, - Lorenz%20attractor
