The Spanish term "cordaje" and the French cognate "cordage" are both collective nouns that denote the set of strings that make up the "stringbed". Another appropriate English equivalent would be "racquet strings"-in the plural. In comparison, the singular term "cuerda" denotes the thin material we call "string" in English. When used in the plural, "cuerdas" and "cordes" are synonomous with "cordaje" and "cordage" respectively. Another point to watch out for : the Spanish term "cordaje" is polysemous. It can denote the process of putting strings on a tennis racquet(=stringing) or it can denote the end product, i. e. the set of strings found on a tennis racquet. Various types of strings used today : multilfilament, multicore(with or without wraps), solid core, textured, unique, construction, hybrid.

Any stroke that for some reason is replayed without penalty. In an average game, only two types of let are encountered : 1) when called solely in respect of a service that one service only shall be replayed; 2) when called under any other circumstance, the point shall be replayed. For instance, a serve that nicks the top of the net, then bounces in the proper service court is to be replayed. By extension, also a call made by the umpire or by one of the players to indicate that a point should be replayed because of a stray ball rolling across the court. Sometimes the term "let" is mistakenly referred to as a "net serve". A "let" is also played if, for instance, the receiver of a service is not ready to start; if one player involuntarily hinders his opponent; or if a player is hindered in playing by an external agency.

Caution: If the ball touches the net on a service, the net judge will call "net", or sometimes "filet"(French Open). The transition from kyanite to andalusite is known as the andalusite isograd, while the transition from andalusite to sillimanite is called the sillimanite isograd.

Note that if were making a geologic map, we could draw a line on the map that separates the pelitic rocks containing only Pyrophyllite from those containing Kyanite + Quartz. Such a line(a surface in 3 dimensions) is called an isograd(iso-same, grad-grade). In this case, since it represents the first appearance of Kyanite, we call it the Kyanite Isograd... If we continue walking along the direction that T & P increased in these rocks during metamorphism, we would eventually come to another place where in the pelitic rocks the mineral assemblage changes. This time the change is from Kyanite + Quartz to Sillimanite + Quartz. Again, we can draw a line on the map that indicates this change in mineral assemblage, this time calling it the Sillimanite Isograd. Just like before, this represents the point on the phase diagram, above, where the geothermal gradient intersected the boundary for the reaction... Because the sandstone and the limestone do not contain Kyanite, the isograd does not appear in these rocks, but we can still extrapolate its position across the map or outcrop.

[Avalanche Victim Search. ] The initial search involves a fast scan of the entire area where victims might be found(that is, from the last seen point, within the perimeters of the avalanche, and in the deposition areas). It concentrates on likely areas of burial in addition to listening for transceiver signals and looking for clues on the surface. Initial searchers should be equipped with transceivers, probe, and shovel as well as a few wands if available. Do a visual search for clues on the surface(that is, hand, foot, clothing, and equipment). Call out occasionally and listen for responses from victims. Pull any items found out on the snow to see if a victim is attached. Mark the location of found items and bring them to the attention of the rescue leader. Listen carefully for transceiver signals in these locations.(If victims were not wearing transceivers or if is unknown whether transceivers were used, quickly probe the area around found items.) If a transceiver signal is found, carry out a transceiver search. If there is more than one person buried, the initial search continues to look for visual clues, etc.

A radar having the capability to illuminate several subswaths by scanning its antenna off-nadir into different positions.

Instead of having the beam sweep along in a continuous fashion, we triggered the TR [transformer-rectifier] modules to electronically wiggle the beam back and forth, perpendicular to the direction of flight. In the radar world, we call this ScanSAR(Scanning Synthetic Aperture Radar), because the beam scans across swath the way an electron beam sweeps across the face of a cathode-ray tube to make a television picture. You point the beam at one spot on the ground for about a tenth of a second, then zip it over to another place and point it there for a while, then you zip it over to a third place, then a fourth. By looking at four such subspots, you can sweep out a much wider swath of data.
