Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense (lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond’s surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn." 5, record 8, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 8, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
turnover : A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Also see overturning. 6, record 8, English, - spring%20overturn

An anti-bird roosting device for protecting an area, comprising at least a pair of cooperating base elements mounted on the area to be protected, and a plurality of projecting spikes, supported on the base elements and projecting away therefrom into a space above the area to be protected. The spikes are provided in a pattern of interspersed combinations of vertical, obtuse and acute angle-forming projections, in a high spike density that prevents roosting in the protected space. Thus, each point in the area to be protected is defended by more than one spike, each spike coming from a different direction, so as to cross-defend each other, creating a perimeter envelope defense of the air volume surrounding the base elements. Each device is easily and inexpensively prepared as a continuous mesh, whose dimensions can be constructed in standard sizes or in accordance with the needs of the user. The element diameter is typically approximately two millimeters. The small element diameter makes the entire device hard to see from a distance so that it does not detract from the building's aesthetics. 1, record 27, English, - anti%2Dbird%20roosting%20device

Supercritical fluid technology is based on properties of compounds when they are placed under pressure and temperature conditions beyond their critical point. Supercritical fluids have a viscosity close to gases, a density close to liquids, and a high diffusivity. The state changes gaseous/supercritical and liquid/supercritical occur in a continuous way. Supercritical fluids have then a tunable solvent power : solubility of compounds in the fluid is correlated to pressure and temperature. Several supercritical fluids have been studied, including propane and water, but the most widely used is supercritical CO2. 2, record 30, English, - supercritical

Les changements d'état gaz/fluide supercritique et liquide/fluide supercritique se font d'une manière continue. Convection. Process of heat [(transfer of heat) ] carried from one point to another by movement of a liquid or a gas(i. e., air). Natural convection is caused by expansion of the liquid or gas when heated. Expansion reduces the density of the medium, causing it to rise above the cooler, more dense portions of the medium. Gravity heating systems are examples of the profitable use of natural convection. The air, heated by the furnace, becomes less dense(consequently lighter) and rises, distributing heat to the various areas of the house without any type of blower. When a blower is used, the heat transfer method is called "forced convection. " 5, record 36, English, - natural%20convection

... hand held weather stations take about every weather factor into consideration. ... Very sophisticated ones not only measure weather conditions every second but make E.T. or throttle stop predictions every 4 seconds. A sophisticated drag racing weather station will allow you to store data on as many as 256 previous runs and performs an analysis to give you a prediction based on the weather conditions instantly. It can keep and use separate databases for separate vehicles, tracks, or classes. Some of the really sophisticated stations have a prediction deviation function [which] gives a reliability value of the prediction. It gives you a margin of error based on the information in the database that you chose. The 3000 adds humidity, dew point and heat stress index.... But for an all out weather station you can hold in the palm of your hand, the Kestrel 4000 provides all of this, in addition to wet bulb, altitude, air density and barometric pressure. Most importantly, 250 of these readings can be recorded in the device's memory and later transferred to the farm computer.... Michael Naughton of Nielsen Keller-man said the company released the 1000 in 1999 with the intention of it being a tool for sailors and outdoor sports and weather enthusiasts. "Farmers are turning out to be a really big part of our business. The 4000 is really popular with them. Long-hole blasting. This method of blasting, employing diamond drills or extension steel drills with tungsten carbide bits, is being applied increasingly to ore winning operations where conditions are suitable. The essential requirements from the practical and economic point of view are :(1) a large ore body or wide regular vein;(2) a strong country rock;(3) a good parting between the ore and the rock to avoid undue contamination of the ore. Holes to take up to 2-inch diameter cartridges may be drilled. Since the drilling of long holes is relatively expensive, high-strength, high-density gelatinous explosives are usually employed so that the maximum burden can be placed on each hole. For this reason also, the largest diameter of explosive cartridge that can be loaded into the holes should be used to obtain the greatest possible loading density. 4, record 43, English, - long%2Dhole%20blasting

Method for the large-scale purification of enzymes. The method involves placing a protein solution into a cell containing a number of semipermeable membranes. The pH of the solution is adjusted to the isoelectric point of the protein to be purified. A current is passed through the solution by two sloping electrodes. Because the required protein is at its isoelectric point it remains stationary in the electric field; all other proteins, being charged, will move either towards the cathode or the anode. This movement will cease when the migrating proteins meet the semipermeable membranes. The accumulation of protein at the membrane surface will cause an increase in density, thus it will move to the bottom of the cell. 2, record 44, English, - multimembrane%20electrodecantation

A modification of the random search which uses a nonuniform distribution from which the sample points are selected as the search continues. The initial point is chosen by making a guess, and a nonuniform probability density function is centered on this guess. The consequent samples are then chosen from this distribution, and a cluster of measurements is created. The best of this initial set of samples is then used as the center of a new set of measurements where the same kind of distribution but with a small variance is used to generate a cluster of points. This process is repeated until the search specifications are satisfied. Thus, the search "creeps" toward the maximum(or minimum). 1, record 45, English, - creeping%20random%20search%20procedure

It is a function of the(velocity of detonation) and the density of an explosive, and is therefore a very important property, especially in hard rock. At the point where the detonation wave has just completed its passage through the column of explosive and the gases have expanded to fill the borehole and are available to commence their work, the borehole pressure is at its peak value. 2, record 46, English, - detonation%20pressure

2, record 46, French, - pression%20de%20d%C3%A9tonation
