Subject field(s)
  • Climatology
CONT

There may be a link between recent climatic trends and wheat yield increases from the 1950s ... Nicholls (1997) attributes part of this increase in yield to a decrease in frost frequency associated with an increasing trend in minimum temperature in eastern Australia.

CONT

The greater geologic climatic trend for southwest Oregon appears to be heading toward hotter and dryer conditions(interspersed with short run wet cycles). These patterns supersede any possible effects of commerce induced global warming influences. If these trends are valid, natural climatic conditions may become an overwhelming limiting factor affecting future salmonid propagation in southwest Oregon.

In-orbit calibration requires having the knowledge to the requested accuracy of the following parameters at the time of radar sensing for a data take : Antenna Radiation Patterns [;] Antenna Pointing(i. e. the reference frame of the radiation pattern) [;] Absolute Gain(i. e. instrument and atmospheric effect) for absolute radiometry [;] Polarimetric characteristics(i. e. crosspolarisation and imbalance effects) [;] Variations of these parameters during the data taking [-] the short-term Instrument Stability Tracking. Tropospheric Fading. Tropospheric turbulence and small changes in the weather are responsible for most fading at VHF and higher. Local weather conditions, such as precipitation, warm air rising over cities and the effects of lakes and rivers, can all contribute to tropospheric instabilities that affect radio propagation.

Performance impairments occur on C- and Ku band satellite communications links because of severe tropospheric fading effects when the elevation angle of the ground station is very low.

The Chilbolton rain radar is a world leader in dual-linear-polarisation measurement techniques. The radar is mounted on a 25m antenna, which gives the radar a high spatial resolution of 0. 25°. Its operating frequency of 3 GHz ensures that the signal is attenuated as little as possible. Researchers are able to predict propagation effects up to at least 40 GHz using the radar, since it can characterise the distribution of rain drop sizes using differential reflectivity.
