PROPELLENT [8 records]

Record 1 2012-06-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Crop Protection
CONT

Few modern pesticides are usable in the technical form. Generally, the chemical is extended or diluted, thereby enabling a more economic coverage of the area or a reduction in the possibility of damage to vegetation. This is usually done by mixing the technical material with a neutral carrier. The carrier may be a liquid in which the pesticide is dissolved or suspended, or it may be an inert dust or granule.

OBS

A liquid carrier may, especially in the case of aerosols, be in fact a liquefied gas. In this case the carrier is called a "propellant", which may also be spelled "propellent".

CONT

New passenger restraint system for the backseats. A shock-absorbent blanket is stored in the back of the front seat, and in the event of a crash is fired out by propellent cartridges located in the boot of the car. The blanket envelopes the passengers and has been designed to restrain up to 600 lbs. in weight in a head-on collision at 40 miles per hour.

CONT

This type of equipment fires a gas-propelled stream of finely-graded abrasive particles through a precise nozzle and directs them against the work. Material is removed from the work by impingement of abrasive particles upon it. This type of action generates very little heat. The abrasion process can be very exact, because of the precise control that a user has over particle direction as well as propellent pressure. Typically, the size and shape of the nozzle can be varied from a 1. 14 mm orifice for higher production models to a 127-um orifice for laboratory models. Applications for abrading equipment are varied. Cutting, deflashing, cleaning, microburring, etching, and restoring can all be accomplished through the use of abrading equipment. When abrading equipment is linked to a pantograph, the unit's handpiece can cut intricate patterns in silicon semiconductors.
