A podded propulsor is defined as a propulsion or maneuvering device, which is external to the ship's hull and houses a propeller powering capability. This distinguishes them from azimuthing thrusters, which have their propulsor powering machinery located within the ship's hull and commonly drive the propeller through a system of shafting and spiral bevel gearing. 3, record 1, English, - podded%20propulsor

Aimed trawling for schools near the surface recorded with [a] sonar has also been successful. The toroidal propeller allows a small multirotor unpiloted aircraft, or drone, to operate more quietly than current drones that use propeller forms unchanged since the beginning of aviation. [It] consists of two blades looping together so that the tip of one blade curves back into the other. This closed-form structure minimizes the drag effects of swirling air tunnels... created at the tips of blades and strengthens the overall stiffness of the propeller. These features reduce the propeller's acoustic signature. 2, record 8, English, - toroidal%20propeller

2, record 8, French, - h%C3%A9lice%20toro%C3%AFdale

Bank effect refers to the tendency of the stern of a ship to swing toward the near bank when operating in a river or constricted waterway. … This phenomenon depends on many parameters, such as bank shape, water depth, ship-bank distance, ship properties, ship speed and propeller action. A reliable estimation of bank effects is important for determining the limiting conditions in which a ship can safely navigate a waterway. 2, record 23, English, - bank%20effect

2, record 23, French, - effet%20de%20berge

Crazy Ivan is a U. S. Navy term for a Soviet submarine manoeuvre, characterized by any number of sudden and sharp turns, used by submarine crews to "look behind" them. Because of the acoustic distortions and noise caused by propeller blades, it is nearly possible for conventional sonars to detect objects directly behind a submarine. Thus, with sudden turns, the area where the sonar is not effective shifts relative to the current heading of the submarine, causing previous gaps in sonar coverage to be revealed while masking known areas. 1, record 43, English, - crazy%20Ivan
Record number: 43, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The "crazy" part of the name comes from the fact that these manoeuvre were very sudden and "Ivan" was a common nickname used to refer to the Russians. A standard tactic of pursuing submarines would be to closely follow the Soviet submarine hidden right in the sonar gap, causing the U.S. submarine to go undetected. 1, record 43, English, - crazy%20Ivan

The term feathering refers to the operation of rotating the blades of a propeller to an edge-to-the-wind position for the purpose of stopping the rotation of the propeller whose blades are thus feathered and to reduce drag. Therefore, a feathered blade is an approximate in-line-of-flight position, streamlined with the line of flight. Some, but not all, propellers can be feathered. Feathering is necessary when an engine fails or when it is desirable to shut off an engine in flight. The pressure of the air on the face and back of the feathered blade is equal, and the propeller will stop rotating. If it is not feathered when its engine stops driving it, the propeller will "windmill" and cause drag. 3, record 44, English, - feathering

Unfeathering is accomplished by holding the feathering button in the OUT position for about 2s. This creates an artificial underspeed condition at the governor and causes high-pressure oil from the feathering pump to be directed to the rear of the propeller piston. As soon as the piston has moved outward a short distance, the blades will have sufficient angle to start rotation of the engine. When this occurs, the unfeathering switch can be released and the governor will assume control of the propeller. 2, record 51, English, - unfeathering

3, record 88, French, - h%C3%A9lice%20supercavitante
