DEF

A type of anemometer in which the rotation of an element serves to measure the wind speed ...

CONT

The rotation anemometer consist of a windmill, or propeller, or three or more semiconical cups attached to an electric generator. The electric current produced is proportional to the wind speed

OBS

... rotation anemometers are divided into two classes: those in which the axis of rotation is horizontal, as exemplified by the windmill anemometer; and those in which the axis is vertical, such as the cup anemometer.

Domaine(s)

CONT

DEF

A rotation anemometer in which the axis of rotation is horizontal.

CONT

[The] windmill anemometer [is] an anemometer in which a windmill is driven by the air stream, and its rotation is transmitted through gearing to dials or other recording mechanism. In some instruments, the rotating vanes and dials are in the same plane; i.e., both vertical, while in others the dial is horizontal. In the windmill type, the operation of air measurement involves readings of dials at the beginning and end of a measured period. Windmill instruments may be fitted with an extension handle, providing a form of remote control; used to measure air speed in an otherwise inaccessible spot.

OBS

The [windmill anemometer] has either flat vanes(as in the air meter) or helicoidal vanes(as in the propeller anemometer). The relation between wind speed and angular rotation is almost linear.

DEF

Instrument used to measure wind speed from the rotation of a fan which turns about a horizontal or vertical axis.

CONT

air-meter: ... It consists of a light "windmill" in which inclined vanes are carried on the spokes of a wheel arranged to rotate about a horizontal axis. A system of counters is provided to show the number of rotation of the wheel. Calibration is effected in terms of a speed unit so that the instrument acts as a convenient portable anemometer. Both "sensitive" (low-speed) and "high-speed" air-meters are used.

CONT

Anemometer: An instrument for determining the speed of the wind. One or other of three properties of the wind is used in such instruments: (i) its kinetic energy, which causes rotation as in cup anemometers and anemometers of the windmill type (air-meter) ...

OBS

windmill anemometer(two types : flat vanes or air meter, helical vanes or propeller anemometer) : anémomètre à moulinet.

DEF

DEF

A rotation anemometer which has a horizontal axis upon which helical shaped vanes are mounted.

CONT

Another increasingly popular type of anemometer is the propeller anemometer. This anemometer is simply a very small two-or three-blade propeller, calibrated so that the revolutions per minute(rpm) corresponds to specific wind speeds. This anemometer is known as a "lift" device because it relies upon the rational lift caused by the wind on the propellers to measure the wind speed. By using two propellers held fixed at a perpendicular angle to each other, one can simultaneously measure the wind speed and direction using vector analysis. By including a third propeller positioned vertically relative to the other two, vertical wind movements also can be measured. It should be noted that the effect of variations in air density(due to temperature and/or pressure conditions) are accounted for differently in lift devices(for example, propeller anemometers) and drag devices(for example, cup anemometers).

CONT

The ... propellor anemometer consists of a circular array of blades, usually not less than three, mounted at one end of a horizontal shaft; the blades are free to rotate in response to wind forces acting on them. A wind vane is attached to the opposite end of the shaft. The horizontal shaft is connected to a vertical shaft which, being mounted in bearings, turns as the varying wind direction acts on the vane.

CONT

THEORY OF MEASUREMENTS : Wind speed :Propeller anemometer. Wind direction : Wind vane.
