PROPELLER EFFICIENCY [6 records]

Record 1 2023-07-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Commercial Fishing
  • Environment
CONT

Aimed trawling for schools near the surface recorded with [a] sonar has also been successful. The best efficiency for such schools was obtained by towing along a [curved] track, so that the trawl passed inside the propeller wake. Nevertheless, occasionally schools avoided the gear. Often these schools seemed to be influenced by the trawl warp and avoided it to pass outside the trawl.

  • Commercial Fishing
CONT

For a fishing vessel with a requirement to tow large loads at low speeds and to have a reasonable free-running speed, a controllable pitch propeller would seem the obvious choice. The propeller efficiency can be maintained at a high level in the two major modes of operation[, ] which realizes a considerable saving in fuel over the life of the vessel.

Generally, slower propeller rotation speed means better efficiency.

CONT

Record 4 2016-04-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
DEF

A propeller system that allows the pilot to adjust the pitch during flight by means of a hydraulic mechanism.

CONT

The blades of a variable-pitch propeller are attached to a mechanism in the hub that rotates the entire blade about an axis that runs along the length of the blade … This allows the blade pitch to be varied continuously by the pilot to maintain optimum efficiency at any airspeed.

OBS

Variable-pitch propellers include propellers whose pitch can be set up automatically and propellers whose pitch can be set up manually (i.e. by pilot’s operation). Although "controllable-pitch propeller" can be a synonym of "variable-pitch propeller," most authors consider that controllable-pitch propellers only include propellers whose pitch can be changed manually.

OBS

controllable-pitch propeller: term standardized by the British Standards Institution.

  • variable-pitch propellor

Domaine(s)

DEF
