Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Crazy Ivan is a U. S. Navy term for a Soviet submarine manoeuvre, characterized by any number of sudden and sharp turns, used by submarine crews to "look behind" them. Because of the acoustic distortions and noise caused by propeller blades, it is nearly possible for conventional sonars to detect objects directly behind a submarine. Thus, with sudden turns, the area where the sonar is not effective shifts relative to the current heading of the submarine, causing previous gaps in sonar coverage to be revealed while masking known areas. 1, record 4, English, - crazy%20Ivan
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The "crazy" part of the name comes from the fact that these manoeuvre were very sudden and "Ivan" was a common nickname used to refer to the Russians. A standard tactic of pursuing submarines would be to closely follow the Soviet submarine hidden right in the sonar gap, causing the U.S. submarine to go undetected. 1, record 4, English, - crazy%20Ivan

The... stealth buoy... has been designed to lie on the ocean floor until it rises to the surface in response to a sound, such as the noise of a ship's propeller. It can monitor an area within a kilometre or two of its placement, transmit data to a receiving station, and then return to the ocean floor to wait for the next event. The air-deployable buoy is a one metre long cylinder and weighs 11-kilograms. It contains batteries, a GPS [global positioning system] device and an Iridium satellite transceiver that can communicate over very long distances, and it is designed to work to a depth of 300 metres... It raises and lowers itself by using an elastic collar that inflates to make the buoy rise, and deflates so that it can sink to the bottom again. 1, record 5, English, - stealth%20buoy

1, record 5, French, - bou%C3%A9e%20furtive
