Uno Vilho Helava, [Finnish] inventor(born [in] 1923)... invented the analytical plotter for automatically drawing maps from photographs. Helava trained as a surveying engineer and came to Canada in 1953 as a research fellow in photogrammetry at the National Research Council. By 1957 he had patented a method of using computers to produce maps from aerial photographs automatically corrected for the curvature of the Earth and atmospheric distortion. The first prototype was built in 1963 using the analogue computer then available... In the late 1970s(digital) microcomputers made the Helava system much cheaper, and several hundred plotters have been built. Because of its affinity with other technologies..., the Helava system is expected to become the world's standard method of making maps by the end of the century.

The... prototype called HEMOS(HEmodynamic MOnitoring System) receives three physiological signals : an ECGlead, aortic pressure(AP) and left auricular pressure(LAP), from the auxiliary output of an existing bedside monitor. These signals are sampled at 250Hz and converted to binary form with 12-bit resolution. The ECG samples are continuously processed to detect and classify ventricular complexes according to their morphology. Samples of the two pressure waveforms are only acquired during the first 15 seconds of each minute, and processed in the course of the remaining 45 seconds. During JSF’S Concept Demonstration phase, Rolls-Royce provided a range of components that enabled Lockheed Martin's X-35B prototype to prove its STOVL capabilities. The project is named the Autonomous Space Processor for Orbital Debris(ASPOD) and is a NASA/Universities Space Research Association(USRA) sponsored design project. The development of ASPOD and the students’ abilities in designing and building a prototype spacecraft are the ultimate goals of this project. This year's focus entailed the development of a secondary robotic arm and end-effector to work in tandem with an existent arm in the removal of orbital debris. The new arm features the introduction of composite materials and a linear drive system, thus producing a light-weight and more accurate prototype. The main characteristic of the end-effector design is that it incorporates all of the motors and gearing internally, thus not subjecting them to the harsh space environment. Furthermore, the arm and the end-effector are automated by a control system with positional feedback. This system is composed of magnetic and optical encoders connected to a 486 PC via two servo-motor controller cards. Programming a series of basic routines and sub-routines has allowed the ASPOD prototype to become more autonomous. The new system is expected to perform specified tasks with a positional accuracy of 0. 5 cm.

Environmental Control Systems Trainer. Additional training in the operation of the environmental control system was provided by the environmental control systems trainer which was a heavy shell mock-up with a prototype spacecraft environmental system. The device used was delivered to NASA in November 1960 and installed in a man-rated vacuum chamber at the U. S. Naval Air Crew Equipment Laboratory in Philadelphia(fig. 10-1(1)). During December of 1960 and January of 1961, the astronauts participated in a program of system familiarization that included being exposed to a simulated reentry heat pulse and approximately 2 hours of the expected postlanding temperature. During these runs, the astronauts wore the pressure suits and became familiar with function of the suits when associated with the environmental control system. However, since a provision had been made for simulating the suit function in the procedures trainer, this type of training was not considered essential This was particularly true since the astronauts received further first-hand familiarization to the environmental control system by participating in the preflight checkout of the spacecraft environmental control system at the launch site.
