PRY STROKE [6 records]

Record 1 2017-10-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Paddle Sports
DEF

A stroke in which the gunwale or side of the canoe is used as a fulcrum and the paddle as a lever.

CONT

Another stroke which may be used by either the bow or stern paddler is the pry stroke. The paddle is inserted vertically in the water, with the power face outward, and the shaft braced against the gunwale. A gentle prying motion is applied, forcing the canoe in the opposite direction of the paddling side.

CONT

Since most hulls tends to veer - once the bow begins to turn, the stern slides out and forward, quickly pivoting the hull - the pry is best applied at the stern to offset veer and keep the hull aligned.

OBS

It is the opposite of a draw, moving the canoe away from the paddle.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Paddle Sports
DEF

A sequence of short forward and backward underwater strokes made with the paddle at an angle to the water, the combined effect of which moves the canoe sideways towards the paddle.

CONT

Used to move the canoe sideways, the sculling draw is ideal for water too shallow to get a good draw or as a bracing technique in rough waters.

CONT

By reversing the angles used for the sculling draw, a [sculling] pry can be applied for lateral translation away from the stroke side.

DEF

A canoeing stroke executed by reaching the paddle out to the side and pulling it toward the canoe with the blade flattened.

CONT

The draw stroke exerts a force opposite to that of the pry. The paddle is inserted vertically in the water at arm's length from the gunwale, with the power face toward the canoe, and is then pulled inward to the paddler's hip.

CONT

The drawstroke paddle maneuver is useful for moving the canoe sideways and for quickly changing the direction of the canoe.
