Le syndrome de verrouillage («locked-in syndrome») est une entité mal connue, qui peut être prise à tort pour un coma. Ce terme définit en fait une paralysie complète des membres et des nerfs crâniens inférieurs, l'état de conscience restant normal. Le sujet peut communiquer au moyen d'un code oculaire, puisque les mouvements de verticalité des paupières et le clignement des paupières sont conservés.
