Each [lobster] trap is allowed to... stay in the water for usually two or three days. Then the lobster boat returns to haul up each trap. The [fisher] will pull the boat up beside the trap and snag the buoy with a gaffe, a special hook designed for that purpose. The trap line will then be brought onto the boat and connected to a hydraulic trap hauler, an automated pulley-like system that reels the trap up from the bottom to the side of the boat.

Penetration diving. In technical penetration diving, there are broadly two approaches. Two redundant cable reels support the Mobile Transporter and Mobile Base System, a movable platform that allows the station's robotic arm to move back and forth along the truss during construction and maintenance work. The Trailing Umbilical System 2 cable appears to have been cut by the system designed to sever it if it ever became snarled or tangled. Video down linked from station cameras confirmed the cable was cut. The Trailing Umbilical System 1 was not affected. The inadvertent severing of the cable tripped one of two redundant circuit breakers on the S0 Truss, which provides power to the Mobile Transporter. The transporter is not scheduled to be used in the near future, but the severed Trailing Umbilical System 2 cable can be replaced through a spacewalk to provide the required redundancy.

This is now the most widely used harvesting method. After bogs are flooded to a depth of about 1 to 2 feet, machines resembling lawn tractors carrying large horizontal reels are passed through the bogs. These reels, about 1 to 2 feet in diameter, churn up the water and vibrate the cranberries loose from the vine. After the berries float to the surface, they are corralled to one end using large floating wooden booms. Berries are then conveyed off the water to waiting trucks for transportation to processing plants.

Cable-Reel Shuttle Cars... were introduced in 1939, the year following the first(battery) shuttle car. Practically all present shuttle cars are powered through cable reels. Reels usually hold 500 ft of cable and, therefore, the maximum haul distance should be kept under 400 ft whenever possible. Cable-reel cars are either standard-hand or opposite-standard-hand models. Standard-hand control means that the seats for the operator, together with the controls, are located on the left front or discharge end of the car similar to the operator's position in an American car or truck. An opposite-hand-control car would have the operator sitting on the right-hand side of the car facing forward when traveling to the discharge point. The cable reel always is located on the side opposite the operator.
