A linear accelerometer using a single-degree-of-freedom gyro having a pendulosity along the spin axis that is servo-driven about the input axis at a rate that balances the torque induced by sensed acceleration along the input axis. The angle through which the servoed axis rotates is proportional to the integral of the sensed acceleration.

CONT

The intercontinental ballistic missiles(ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles(SLBM) developed over the past 50 years have employed successive generations of increasingly accurate inertial guidance systems. The comparatively short time of guided flight and high acceleration levels characteristic of the ballistic missile application place a premium on accelerometer performance to achieve desired weapon system accuracy. To date, the accelerometer design of choice for strategic missiles has been the Pendulous Integrating Gyroscopic Accelerometer(PIGA) instrument, an accelerometer whose origins trace back to the German V2 rocket, and has been refined through several generations of development to achieve unsurpassed performance.

Project Management Practice Standard-Section 3. 3. 5-Concept Design : in some instances, where projects are small or consist of engineered works(where preliminary studies have already been done), this sub-phase may be combined with 3. 3. 6 Design Development. However, where the project is large, complex or unique the Project Team may decide that it is more efficient and economical to discuss the merits of various design options, while the design is still in conceptual form. In the latter case, the objective of this sub-phase is to conceptually define the design concept and the class C cost estimate, and then to gain client and RPS approval prior to instructing the designers to develop a more refined design. Although the consultant and client may communicate directly, the Project Manager must manage the communication flow to control project commitments and to ensure that there is full understanding by both parties. This involves helping the client to analyze and to evaluate the consultant's enquiries, and then responding to the consultant in technical terms which satisfy specific design conditions. Once the consultant has fulfilled the requirement for submissions as specified in the Project Brief, and the client, the project team, the regulatory authorities and the RPS design authorities have accepted the final concept, the Project Manager ensures adequate documentation of these positions in a Conceptual Design Report. This report is formally signed off by all Project Team members. Thus, this sub-phase is completed when the Project Manager is convinced that the consultant has adequately addressed the needs of the client/owner within acceptable time, cost and quality parameters. Only then will the Project Manager allow the consultant to refine the concept in the Design Development phase.

CONT

A computer program, which runs on MS-DOS personal computers, is described that assists in the design of synthetic genes coding for proteins. The goal of the program is the design of a gene which (i) contains as many unique restriction sites as possible and (ii) uses a specific codon usage. The gene designed according to the criteria above is (i) suitable for ’modular mutagenesis’ experiments and (ii) optimized for expression. The program ’reverse-translates’ protein sequences into degenerated DNA sequences, generates a map of potential restriction sites and locates sequence positions where unique restriction sites can be accommodated. The nucleic acid sequence is then ’refined’ according to a specific codon usage to remove any degeneration. Unique restriction sites, if potentially present, can be ’forced’ into the degenerated nucleic acid sequence by using ’priority codes’ assigned to different restriction sequences.

The overall aim [of design] is to create a successful product.... The sequence starts with some general requirement to be fulfilled.... The general requirement is refined into a technical requirement(design, product, or target specification.)

Since several requirements are defined for each product, the term "product specification" is usually encountered in the plural. If, however, reference is being made to the document which lists the set of requirements, then the singular is always used. See the record for "specification".

DEF

A unit of decision in a didactic process. It is more general than a didactic intervention, in that it does not necessarily correspond to actions visible to the student. Defined in the framework of "plan", it includes all situations from the simple prestored interventions of current systems to the dynamic knowledge communication capabilities of futuristic tutors (See Macmillan and Sleeman, 1987).

CONT

In addition to generating an episode of actions or subgoals, a didactic operation can generate explicit diagnostic expectations.

OBS

Most didactic operations in today's tutors consist of a single basic action, such as presenting a piece of prestored text or submitting a selected problem. Since these prefabricated interventions are didactically planned during system design, the granularity of the decisions that remain to the system itself is fairly coarse. It can be refined, however, if the underlying plan or the set of expectations are made explicit to the system.
