An effective laser also needs to have an optical resonant cavity in which the photon emission is amplified. This resonant cavity is a Fabry-Perot etalon... The etalon, consists of two parallel, semi-reflecting mirrors. The etalon is a Fabry-Perot interferometer whose mirrors are separated by a fixed distance. Electromagnetic radiation passes through the first half-silvered mirror(left-hand side). The radiation can then either be transmitted through or reflected by the second mirror. If the radiation is reflected, more electron-hole pairs are stimulated to emit radiation. Constructive interference occurs between the reflected wave and the more recently emitted wave, and the radiation is amplified. 10, record 13, English, - resonant%20cavity

Eppley Precision Spectral Pyranometer, PSP. This instrument is considered to be the most accurate radiometer produced commercially for the measurement of global sun and sky radiation, totally or in defined wavelength bands. It can be inverted to measure reflected shortwave radiation(from which the albedo can be calculated). The PSP has a circular multi-junction thermopile of the plated(copper-constantan) wire wound type which is temperature compensated in order to get a response that is independent of ambient temperature. The temperature sensed by the detector is nearly linear with the flux density of incident radiation. The instrument is supplied with a pair of removable precision ground and polished concentric hemispheres of Schott optical glass. The inner hemisphere is transparent to a wavelength of 0. 285-2. 800 µm. The outer dome can be replaced by Schott glass hemispherical filters which transmit within specified bandwidths. Desiccant is placed in the side of the instrument to absorb humidity inside the glass domes. Measurements are reported in Wm-2. 1, record 24, English, - Eppley%20precision%20spectral%20pyranometer

When a pyranometer is oriented downwards it measures the reflected shortwave radiation, and is thus called an albedometer. When two pyranometers are associated, one oriented upwards and the other downwards, the net short wave radiation is measured. The instrument is then called a net pyranometer. A point of caution is that any instrument used as an albedometer or net pyranometer must have mil sensitivity to all spectra of visible light. Remote Sensing is the science and art of acquiring information(spectral, spatial, temporal) about material objects, area, or phenomenon, without coming into physical contact with the objects, or area, or phenomenon under investigation.... In remote sensing, information transfer is accomplished by use of electromagnetic radiation(EMR). EMR is a form of energy that reveals its presence by the observable effects it produces when it strikes the matter.... Types [of remote sensing] in respect to the type of energy resources. Passive remote sensing makes use of sensors that detect the reflected or emitted electro-magnetic radiation from natural sources. Active remote sensing makes use of sensors that detect reflected responses from objects that are irradiated from artificially-generated energy sources, such as radar.... In respect to wavelength regions, remote sensing is categorized as follows : visible and reflective infrared remote sensing, thermal infrared remote sensing and microwave remote sensing. 6, record 33, English, - electromagnetic%20remote%20sensing

Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back.
4, record 42, French, - polarisation
Record number: 42, Textual support number: 3 CONT
4, record 42, French, - polarisation

A portion of the sunlight that reaches Earth is absorbed into the system, while some of the light is reflected by our planet back into space. 2, record 47, French, - d%C3%A9ficit%20d%27%C3%A9nergie

The first ionospheric layer found was the so called E layer or region at about 110 km altitude. It is used by radio operators as a surface from which signals can be reflected to distant stations. It is interesting to note that this works also the other way round and, for example, the auroral kilometric radiation created by the precipitating particles high above the ionosphere does not reach the ground because of the ionospheric E layer. Above the E layer, a F layer consisting of two parts can be found : F1 is at about 170 km, and F2 at about 250 km altitude. Also F layer reflects radio waves. The lowermost region of the ionosphere below 80 km altitude, D layer, however, principally absorbs radio waves. 2, record 56, English, - ionospheric%20layer

There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission.... The "backscatter method" eliminates the need for an access hole by allowing both the source and detector to remain on the surface. Radiation is directed beneath the surface, and some radiation is reflected, or "scattered" back to the gauge detector by the surface material. This method... is... insensitive to density variations beyond a depth of 2 to 3 inches. However, the backscatter method is quicker than the direct transmission, and is useful when measuring uniform material such as asphalt paving. 1, record 58, English, - backscatter%20method

The laser Doppler velocimeter sends a monochromatic laser beam toward the target and collects the reflected radiation. According to the Doppler effect, the change in wavelength of the reflected radiation is a function of the targeted object's relative velocity. Thus, the velocity of the object can be obtained by measuring the change in wavelength of the reflected laser light, which is done by forming an interference fringe pattern(i. e. superimpose the original and reflected signals). 3, record 63, English, - laser%20Doppler%20velocimeter

Optical remote sensing makes use of visible, near infrared and short-wave infrared sensors to form images of the earth's surface by detecting the solar radiation reflected from targets on the ground. Why is the sky blue?... Scattering, simply defined, is when light hitting a volume of air is reflected out of the air, as opposed to being absorbed or just passing through. The light bounces off of individual air particles in random directions, scattering, and making that air appear the color of the light being scattered. Preferential light scattering means that some colors of light scatter better, while other colors tend only to pass through. Lord Rayleigh, a 19th century British physicist, first explained preferential light scattering.(Sir Isaac Newton first established the phenomenon's existence.) Common air particle diameters are 1 micron(micrometer),. 1 micron, and. 01 micron.... "Rayleigh's Law indicates that the light energy scattered per unit volume of air containing particles smaller than. 1 micron is inversely proportional to the 4th power of the wavelength of the illuminating radiation(Schaeffer 155) "... More simply stated, the amount of light that bounces around in our air increases as the wavelength(which is related to color) of the light decreases. 2, record 65, English, - Rayleigh%20Law

The laser(or lidar) velocimeter [lidar=light radar] operates in a fashion entirely analogous to that of the airborne Doppler weather radars likely soon to be available for detecting turbulence in storm cells. As with radars, the device detects air movements by observing the motion of particles suspended in the air and carried with it. The only significant difference is that a beam of coherent infrared radiation is used to scan ahead of the aircraft, instead of a beam(or series of pulses) of radio energy in the considerably longer-wavelength microwave band. The frequency of the back-scattered echoes or reflections undergoes Doppler shift detection by standard heterodyning techniques, which involve comparing the frequency of the reflected illumination with that of the original laser beam. Any reflecting object or material which has motion relative to the transmitter/receiver will cause a detectable shift in frequency, which can be isolated from the transmitter's own proper motion(over the ground) and thus yield a precise indication of the speed at which the air is moving several hundred metres in front of the aircraft. From this data, it is easy to compute what the air speed of the aircraft will be when it reaches that particular patch of air in a few seconds’ time [and hence detect possible turbulence ahead]. 2, record 71, English, - laser%20velocimeter
