DEF

A technique for determining, by tracing imaginary rays of light from the viewer’s eye to the objects in a scene, the parts of the scene that should be displayed in the resulting display image.

CONT

Ray-tracing technique relies on an extremely time-consuming algorithm to compute the reflection and refraction of light from the surfaces of imaginary objects. Basically the computer program traces individual light rays, starting at the viewpoint and passing backward through each pixel in the image plane until the ray hits a surface. The reflected ray is then continued to see if it could have come from a light source, either directly or after reflection from another object. For a transparent surface a second, refracted ray must also be traced.

OBS

Tracing may involve reflections and refractions of the light.

OBS

ray tracing; ray casting : terms standardized by ISO and CSA.

DEF

CONT

ionospheric propagation mode. A single ray path between the transmitter and receiver. An ionospheric propagation path may comprise several different individual paths, all of which can propagate the signal from the transmitter to the receiver. The mode is labeled in terms of the number of reflections it experiences for each of the layers from which it is reflected. The simplest ionospheric mode is a single hop path having one reflection on the ionosphere... More complex modes can have several reflections from a layer... and may also have reflections from more than one layer...

DEF

The angle between a reflected ray and the normal drawn at the point of incidence to a reflecting surface.

CONT

Specular reflection occurs when the energy which is reflected by the surface continues to travel in one direction and the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence.

OBS

angle of reflection: term officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

DEF

DEF

The study of the behavior of sound under the assumption that sound traversing a homogeneous medium travels along straight lines or rays.

CONT

... the methods of geometrical, or ray, acoustics assume that sound travels as rays, in a manner similar to that of light rays... the angle of the reflected ray is equal to the angle of the incident ray if the surface is large compared with the wavelength.

CONT

CONT

The most computationally complex and most realistic algorithms for dealing with both reflection and refraction are called ray-tracing algorithms. In essence they trace individual light rays to determine which of them end up at the viewpoint and how they got there. In order to avoid having to deal with an infinity of lines emanating from a point source, the process works backward, starting at each pixel. Each ray starting at the viewpoint and passing through a pixel is projected backward until it hits a surface. The backward tracing of the reflected ray then continues to determine whether it could have come from a light source or from reflection from another object.

DEF

The angle which a ray, reflected from a surface, makes with the normal to the surface. The angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence.

CONT

Equally well expressed in terms of the incident and reflected rays, this law [of reflection] is the same law that holds for light, namely, that the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Acoustique (Physique)
CONT
