Doppler weather radar. For many years radar has been used to provide information about the intensity and extent of rain and other forms of precipitation.... A major improvement in the capability of weather radar came about when engineers developed new radars that could measure the Doppler frequency shift in addition to the magnitude of the echo signal reflected from precipitation. The Doppler frequency shift is important because it is related to the radial velocity of the precipitation blown by wind(the component of the wind moving either toward or away from the radar installation). Since tornadoes, mesocyclones(which spawn tornadoes), hurricanes, and other hazardous weather phenomena tend to rotate, measurement of the radial wind speed as a function of viewing angle will identify rotating weather patterns. 3, record 3, English, - Doppler%20weather%20radar

synthetic aperture radar; SAR :[A] synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is a side-looking imaging radar usually operating on either an aircraft or a spacecraft. The radar transmits a series of short, coherent pulses to the ground producing a footprint whose size is inversely proportional to the antenna size, its aperture. Because the antenna size is generally small, the footprint is large and any particular target is illuminated by several hundred radar pulses. Intensive signal processing involving the detection of small Doppler shifts in the reflected signals from targets to the moving radar produces a high resolution image that is equivalent to one that would have been collected by a radar with a much larger aperture. 4, record 4, English, - C%2Dband%20synthetic%20aperture%20radar

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration. 1, record 7, English, - laser%20force%20microscope

Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Radiometric resolution, or radiometric sensitivity refers to the number of digital levels used to express the data collected by the sensor. In general, the greater the number of levels, the greater the detail of information. The number of levels is normally expressed as the number of binary digits needed to store the value of the maximum level, for example a radiometric resolution of 1 bit would be 2 levels, 2 bits would be 4 levels and 8 bits would be 256 levels. The number of levels is often referred to as the Digital Number, or DN value. 2, record 8, English, - radiometric%20resolution

The longitudinal and the lateral speed of the ship may be measured by means of a sonar doppler log which operates on the principle that a sonar signal transmitted from a moving object and reflected back from a stationary surface will indicate a shift in frequency; this shift in frequency is proportional to the speed relative to the stationary surface of the moving object, which in this case will be the ship. 2, record 12, English, - lateral%20speed

ionospheric propagation mode. A single ray path between the transmitter and receiver. An ionospheric propagation path may comprise several different individual paths, all of which can propagate the signal from the transmitter to the receiver. The mode is labeled in terms of the number of reflections it experiences for each of the layers from which it is reflected. The simplest ionospheric mode is a single hop path having one reflection on the ionosphere... Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back. Most radar imaging sensors are designed to transmit microwave radiation either horizontally polarized(H) or vertically polarized(V), and receive either the horizontally or vertically polarized backscattered energy. 4, record 23, English, - polarization

Polarimetric radars, like RADARDAT-2, are able to transmit and receive both horizontal and vertical polarizations.
4, record 23, French, - polarisation
Record number: 23, Textual support number: 3 CONT
4, record 23, French, - polarisation

The TOPEX/Poseidon(T/P) altimetry data were obtained mountainous topography may lead the altimeter to lock off completely, requiring some time to lock on again, even over water and for narrow rivers, the instrument may deliver no reliable measurement at all. In other cases, the instrument could remain locked on water while the satellite is well ahead of the water body, since the reflected signal on water has more power than the reflected signal on land. This may cause a geometric error that could reach several meters for some regions. In order to minimise potential contamination of the T/P signal by land reflections, and at the same time to retain a sufficiently large number of altimeter measurements on water, we performed a geographical selection of the data. 2, record 24, English, - geometric%20error
