Le microscope à ultraviolets utilise le rayonnement ultraviolet au lieu de la lumière visible. Les longueurs d'ondes de ce rayonnement, plus courtes que celles de la lumière visible, procurent à ce type de microscope une meilleure résolution. L'absorption sélective de la bande des rayons ultraviolets dans différentes longueurs d'ondes permet de renforcer certains détails de l'échantillon observé. Comme le verre ne laisse pas passer les ultraviolets de faible longueur d'onde, on utilise des systèmes optiques en quartz, en fluorine et des miroirs en aluminium. De plus, comme le rayonnement ultraviolet est invisible, on visualise les images par phosphorescence, par photographie ou par balayage électronique. L'étude des minerais au microscope à réflexion est fondamentale en métallogénie, théorique ou appliquée. Elle a conduit à supprimer un grand nombre de soi-disant espèces minérales, qui étaient en réalité des agrégats très fins de plusieurs minéraux.
