A variable not dependent on another variable for its value. For example, in a time series of wheat output per year and rainfall per year, wheat output is the dependent variable and rainfall the independent variable.

When the independent variables of a regression function are random variables, there is an equivalence between correlation coefficients and regression coefficients; after one set has been defined, the definition of the other follows automatically....

The menopause is the final menstrual period denoting the cessation of cyclic ovarian function as manifested by cyclic menstruation. The climacteric is the physiologic period during which regression of ovarian function occurs. Its onset generally is signaled by alterations in the menstrual cycle or vasomotor symptomatology.

Image processing where different images taken on a same date can be compared without applying complex atmospheric and radiometric corrections.

CONT

Image regression, where the pixel values of the second image are assumed to be a linear function of the corresponding pixel values of the first image. A least squares regression can be used to determine the linear function. Using this function the estimated pixel values for the second image can be computed. The image difference is determined between the estimated second image and the first image using either image differencing or image ratioing. If there is no change the pixel values of the unchanged areas will be close to the estimated pixel values, otherwise there will be changes.
